But why? Are we running out of air to put in basketballs? Performance is below standard. Exorbitantly expensive price availability makes it inaccessible. If it’s innovation for exploration and experimentation that’s cool but why is this a “retail” product? What makes this successful? To me, it seems like this is a perfect example of my post from last week explaining that “expensive product ≠ good design”. Just because it can be done, is that reason enough? I can’t see what makes this good design.

Congratulations to Women's Basketball!! The 2023-2024 season will be looked back on as the year that took the Women's game to another level, thanks in large part to Caitlin Clark!!! She's definitely one of the GOATs and has cemented her place in history. It was also another opportunity to witness the greatness of Coach Staley! Coach Dawn Staley demonstrates fantastic leadership lessons on the regular. This interview following yesterday's Final Four Championship win showcases 3 lessons we can all learn from: ❤️ Psychological Safety: According to InnerDrive, "athletes in a psychologically safe environment are genuinely interested in their teammates, have positive intensions towards one another, as well as a mutual respect for others’ competence, especially when mistakes are made." South Carolina lost all 5 starters from last year and the bench scored 37 points in the final this year. No team had made it to the final without at least 1 returning starter and 37 points from the bench, the most in 25 years. Coach Staley was concerned about their level of "being free/loose" in the locker room prior to the game, but let this team be them and was willing to see what would happen when the game started. It didn't go well, so Coach and her staff made some adjustments to get them back on track. 🙌🙌🙌Publicly giving Credit where it's due: Coach Staley was quick to give credit to their new Asst Coach, Winston Gandy, credit for the scouting report and preparation prior to the final. "He was a difference maker." 👏👏👏Prioritize what's Most important: Coach Gandy did such a thorough job scouting that when they were making adjustments during the game, he provided the staff with so many ways they should adjust which caused a bit of overwhelm for the group. Coach Staley listened to all of them, but ultimately stepped in to have the team focus on Big Adjustments. Ultimately someone (head coach/director/VP/CEO) needs to make a decision when there are so many options on the table and get the team behind those decisions.

#internationalwomensday2024 is tomorrow - so I'm getting my post in early to beat the trend :). If you need an inspiring brain break, check out this great Philadelphia magazine article on girls #wrestling in Pennsylvania. These girls represent the culmination of so much work from those who came before, and the foundation of an amazing future. I've been lucky enough to see many of these girls on the mat this season during my son's tournaments and matches. Some observations: - These girls win more than they lose, often even when going head-to-head with a boy who appears stronger. They're technically knowledgeable, patient, strong and quick.. and tough! - Spectators tend to openly underestimate the girls. They go and win anyway. - The young wrestlers are growing up with girls on their teams - and they visibly are less thrown off when facing a female opponent - The (mostly male) coaches are amazing allies helping drive this change. They are coaching boys and girls with the same intensity, focus, and attention. Four lessons we can extrapolate into the world of work and #DEI : 1. Women are capable. A complete sentence. :) 2. Women constantly have to battle back against latent & blatant expectations and still deliver. 3. Equity and representation matters. The faster we can get to parity in all types of groups, the faster we can get past the challenges of over-indexing focus on those who appear to be different from a similar group. 4. Allies matter. When an in-group actively drives inclusion, otherness can fade to the background. And sometimes all it takes is letting someone in and treating them exactly the same. Not so hard. These girls have been such an inspiration to me this winter. Hope you have a chance to read this article - well written and insightful.

What do you do when you’re working hard, but are down three games and a coach? You invest in the team (and of course look for a new coach). That’s exactly what Laura did as player/team manager when the going got tough. I have come to know Laura as someone deeply committed to her team, teammates, and the game of basketball. Playing second division semi-pro basketbal isn’t easy. Training and competition is fierce, games logistics geographically challenging, and on top of that there is limited budget for non-essential staff and support. As such you have to invest wisely, and the team has to work hard on and off the pitch to realize their dream. Doing it alone is hard work, but together has the potential to make it feel like a breeze. On a rainy and cold December evening we met at the Rundsporthalle in Bochum to play a game with the team. Not the usual five against five Basketball, but this time a Soulbound Session including a unique card game. With a couple of girls already travelling home for Christmas, the team was incomplete yet enough to start making a difference. In fact, 5-8 is the perfect group size for playing the card game. Opening up about the #emotions we experience, both good and bad, may initially seem daunting. However, it can actually be enlightening, revealing, and calming. Together with psychologists, sports therapists, and certified coaches, we've developed a unique card game grounded in the latest well-being research, gratitude science, and Non-Violent Communication practices. While that sounds robust, in the team’s own words the session was “engaging” “very approachable” and “fun”. Two months have passed since that session late December, and something has clearly clicked. The team has won their last five games consecutively, climbed to 3rd place, and secured a spot in the playoffs. Of course, getting back on track requires many elements to align, but it's the mutual understanding and bonding that lay the groundwork for what can only be described as #team magic. Whether in #EliteSports or high-performing #work #teams, decades from now we won’t remember the individual wins and loses, but we will always remember how it felt being part of a team with #soul. #soulfulness #teamperformance #curiosity #kindness #play
