In a recent interview, I discussed the four pillars of leadership, as defined in the 'Charge of Command' by the U.S. Navy: authority, responsibility, accountability, and expertise. Around five years ago, I had the opportunity and honor to do an arrested landing (aka trap) and subsequent catapult shot in the Pacific onto the USS Nimitz (CVN-78), Carrier Strike Group 11, and experience Navy leadership up close and personal. Observing the combined efforts of the entire Carrier Strike group had a huge impact on my thoughts about leadership, teamwork, and core values (the Navy's core values are honor, courage, and commitment). On board, every job is essential, but the glue of the operation is the chiefs. In the U.S. Navy, chiefs are not only experts in their field; they enforce discipline, maintain tradition, and are expected to be leaders all day, every day, whether on or off duty. It's often said chiefs don't run the Navy; they make the Navy run. If you're the CEO of a business, make sure you have great chiefs around you. #gonavy #leadership #teameffectiveness #business

We can proactively shape our military leadership for the better. In 1941, General Marshall led a major restructuring of the military's leadership. Hundreds of officers were retired or discharged to bring in new and dynamic perspectives. The initiative was controversial, but aimed to improve the army's effectiveness. We must improve our leadership by identifying and promoting capable individuals with skills and innovative vision for modern warfare. These high-potential officers should not have to wait for the traditional command rotation; their talents are needed now more than ever. If we hesitate, our adversaries may capitalize on our stagnation, forcing us into a reactive stance.

Taking a cue from my colleague, Samson Stevens, I listened to the leadership talk General Jim Mattis gave on the topic of Critical Thinking to midshipmen at the US Naval Academy on October 25th. Here's my list of takeaways that apply to leaders at all levels: - As a leader your job is to absorb fear and radiate hope (or you could say absorb uncertainty, stress, etc); - Victimhood and cynicism are corrosive and have no place in the naval forces; they are words for cowardice; - To keep thinking fresh to innovate and stay ahead of what’s coming next, cultivate an insatiable sense of curiosity! - Don’t ask for a mentor, EARN a mentor; - You don’t get to declare yourself a leader; your troops will decide if you’re a leader; - Never be caught flat footed: anticipate, anticipate, anticipate. Wise words to live and lead by. #leadership https://lnkd.in/eKC3PmkH

It is amazing how many great leaders are out there passing on their wisdom. They are giving away for free what took them most of their careers to develop. Now is the time to embrace it, and hone it and implement it into today's workforce.

"The Air Force's Black Ceiling" was the first book I published in 2016. Listen to the sample free on Audible today! Click link below. Though some of the information in it is a bit dated by the addition of two black four-star generals (one who became the Air Force's Chief of Staff and later Chairman of the Joint Chiefs), its underlying principles are still relevant today. The Air Force is still achieving "firsts." Lieutenant General Adrian L. Spain became the Air Force's first black Deputy Chief of Staff for Operation or "A3" functions at the Pentagon in 2023. It is 2024, and the Air Force has had only one black fighter wing commander in the continental US. Retired General Lloyd Fig. Newton commanded the 49th FW (F-117s) at Holloman AFB in 1993. There has never been a black fighter wing commander at Air Combat Command/Tactical Air Command's "premiere" bases: Langley, Shaw, Seymour-Johnston, or Hill AFBs. This book has two sequels: "The Air Force's Black Pilot Training Experience" and "The Air Force's Black Pilot State of the Union." https://lnkd.in/eA5YWTzt #book #books #airforce #usaf #usairforce #csaf #audiobook #diversity #pilot #blackpilot #tuskegeeairmen #military #militaryhistory #blackhistory #blackauthor #mustread

#CompanyCulture impacts employees A core value of the Air National Guard as a component of the United States Air Force is Service Before Self, and if you had asked me what my values were in my 20s, I would have told you Honor, Duty, and Sacrifice. A company value at Greencastle Consulting is Family Comes First. Recently, I had to decide whether or not an Airman could make up a drill for what he deemed a family matter. In my experience, this would not have been considered a family emergency by the military. I let him make up that drill. My 9 to 5 steered my decision. >>----------------> #leadership #management #culture

The quality of leadership received in the military is unparalleled! You learn to be led so you can soon lead. The military teaches you how to put others wellbeing above your own and shows you how success comes from Servant Leadership! They show you how to show up every minute of every day! When a military person transitions out and joins the civilian workforce, it's hard because their experience with leadership says, "I would die for you!" In civilian life its hard to find someone to even stand up for you. It is a HUGE dynamic shift! I see the impact leaders with a military background bring to their team. Vicki Sharp, CALP, CAPS, CDPM , Joseph Mulder, Rebecca R., Alex O'Brien, Katona (Kat) Zito, Jeremiah Giovanna, Luis Quinones and Julie Curtis - I see you🇺🇲 and I know your teams appreciate the lengths you would go through to see them succeed! Anyone on a new career journey should ask in an interview "Who in your leadership has served our nation?" Do your research! I'm sure I missed people - comment below and shout yourselves out! #militaryleadership #impact #servantleadership #navyveteran #marinecorps #army #airforce #coastguard #qualityleadership

I would love to read dialogue among command sergeants major on the topic of this article. Do we need updated doctrine and program of instruction (POI) adjustments in our professional military education (PME)?
Command sergeants major possess the influence, power, and expertise to enhance the readiness of their organizations and demonstrate care to their soldiers—the U.S. Army’s most vital resource. Yet, specific regulations and leadership development do not adequately address the formidable roles they play. Read about it at https://lnkd.in/gxVKB_zZ.
