A new scoping review of 130 lower limb prosthetic articles and 117 upper limb prosthetic articles seeks to identify gaps or limitations in research that are creating barriers for the digital fabrication of prosthetics. Limitations include: ➡️ Lack of long-term, larger-scale studies ➡️ Research into the training requirements for these technologies and the necessary rectification processes ➡️ High range of variance of production workflows and materials Read the full review and conclusions here: https://buff.ly/49RzLmk Academy members can access this review and more in O&PiQ: https://buff.ly/4aUKGwK #OandP #OandPResearch #DigitalFabrication #Prosthetics

Great invention, but is this material also breathable ?
🔔Exciting news in Prosthetics⚡ I am thrilled to announce that our research, entitled "Single Polymer Composites: An Innovative Solution for Lower Limb Prosthetic Sockets," has been published in the Prosthesis Journal (Q1). The research focuses on manufacturing prosthetic sockets using self-reinforced polymer composites. The study comprises PLA, PET, carbon fibre, and glass fibre based commingled yarn, in which both the reinforcement and matrix are in fibre form. We utilised a reusable vacuum bag and a purpose-built infrared-based curing oven to melt the matrix in the commingled yarn. Following the manufacturing of the test socket, we fabricated patient-specific sockets using PET composite for unilateral amputees and analysed the gait cycle. Overall, our study identified self-reinforced composites as ideal candidates for prosthetic socket applications due to their mouldable nature and recyclable properties. My sincere thanks to my supervisors and co-authors, Dr. Karthikeyan Kandan, Dr Farukh (CEng FIMechE SFHEA) and Prof. Arjan Buis for their unwavering support. The image shows the working of commingled yarn and the fabricated patient-specific socket. 📖Read our full paper at https://lnkd.in/ef5saE35 Royal Academy of Engineering DMU Research #prostheticsocket #rehabilitation #selfreinforcedcomposites #artificiallimbs

We have great news! 🚀 Our project around the Lynk System is funded by Innosuisse as part of the Swiss Accelerator 2023 programme! 🎉 💡 What does that mean for you? Imagine being able to solve various problems in the area of grasping - whether due to spasticity, paralysis or polyarthritis - with a modular system. This is exactly what the Lynk System offers. Innosuisse's funding will enable us to fully develop the system portfolio and improve access to these devices. The Lynk System is a modular hand orthosis from the 3D printer, specially developed for people with limited or no gripping function. It gives you the opportunity to provide your patients with fast and flexible care - including the option of remote care if necessary - while offering a modern, lightweight solution. 3D printing is transforming manufacturing around the world. GO Orthotics Ltd in New Zealand has chosen Stratasys SAF technology to scale up its personalized-insoles production. Stratasys H350 not only offers the best-in-class cost-per-part, repeatability, and accuracy. But also, it´s a great solution from a sustainability point of view. It offers the lowest energy consumption per cm3 printed in powder bed fusion. On top of that, like in this particular case, if you use PA11, not only you get perfect mechanical properties for orthotics, but it´s also a biomaterial sourced from non-edible vegetables. https://lnkd.in/d-UThZqM?

Aging populations and an increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes contribute to a growing demand for prosthetic devices worldwide. Carbon epoxy prosthetics are rapidly capturing the market besides being slightly expensive than other materials. However, these have many advantages like reduced weight and durability. The price of carbon epoxy prosthetics can vary widely depending on factors such as the level of customization, complexity of the prosthetic design, materials used and the manufacturer. Continued collaboration between industry stakeholders, researchers, healthcare providers and policymakers will continue to play a crucial role in shaping the evolution of prosthetic technology and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with limb loss. Technology Education and Mentoring Center (TE&MC) has uploaded a video describing details of carbon epoxy prosthetics on following link. https://lnkd.in/geCRB2PR

The manufacturing industry is vast, and there are infinite possibilities to what you can do. Two of my favorite aspects within the industry are Computer Aided Design and 3D printing/ rapid prototyping. By combining the two we can bring ideas to life in a matter of hours. 3D printing prosthetics has always fascinated me and I hope that someday, I can help those in need while combining the skills I have acquired.
