To maximize the impact of the IC's work there is an urgent need to conduct a rigorous up-to-date needs assessment. The International Simulation Data Registry (ISDR) was established in 2014 and is inspired by the increasingly numerous and widely used clinical registries. It aims to enhance simulation-based medical education (SBME) and improve clinical practices and patient outcomes. A recent strategic partnership was initiated between the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and The University of Toledo to update the ISDR to version 2.0. This collaboration aims to leverage a novel multimodal assessment platform, enhancing the ISDR's capabilities. A frequently-asked question the ABNM receives is whether board certification is the same as medical license? The answer is No - Board certification is not the same as medical license. While both are essential for practicing medicine, they serve different purposes: Medical License: This is a government-issued document that grants a physician the legal right to practice medicine within a specific jurisdiction. It ensures that the physician has met the minimum educational and training requirements, and is qualified to provide medical care. Board Certification: This is a voluntary credential granted by a specialty board. It signifies that the doctor has specialized training and knowledge in a particular area of medicine, and has passed rigorous examinations. Board certification is often seen as a mark of excellence and can enhance a doctor's credibility. In other words, a medical license is required to practice medicine legally, while board certification is an optional credential that demonstrates specialized expertise in a particular field. Remember that the #DABNM certification is not just a credential. It is a key that unlocks a comprehensive range of competencies in Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring (#IONM). With this certification, you're recognized for your capability to interpret neurophysiologic data, elaborate differential diagnoses and make recommendations for therapeutic interventions based on the IONM data. For anyone considering this certification or curious about expanding their qualifications in IONM, the DABNM represents a significant step forward. The profession of medicine is frequently described as an art and science. As a physician who teaches residents, I have often felt that teaching the art has been discounted and that teaching the science has taken predominance. I teach that science, is the what we need to know of medicine and the art, is the how we go about it. To elaborate, to diagnose cancer I need to know what tests to order, the science, to break the news and still give hope to the patient when presenting that diagnosis is the art. The article below touches on that beautifully and mentions one of my favourite books, compassionomics. The latter is well worth a read and proves there is evidence and value to practising the art of medicine.

In recent centuries, since the advent of modern science, most medicine has become a combination of art and science (both basic and applied, under the umbrella of medical science). For example, while stitching technique for sutures is an art learned through practice, knowledge of what happens at the cellular and molecular level in the tissues being stitched arises through science. Prescientific forms of medicine, now known as traditional medicine or folk medicine, remain commonly used in the absence of scientific medicine and are thus called alternative medicine. Alternative treatments outside of scientific medicine with ethical, safety and efficacy concerns are termed quackery.

Tomorrow we proudly present our research results at European Congress of Medical Physics (ECMP) 2024 in cooperation with Westfälisches Zentrum für Radiologie (WRZ), St. Franziskus-Stiftung Münster.   To date, patient exposure to radiation in clinical radiological context is controlled by using diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) as comparator for each examination, determined for standard procedures and standard patients (70+-5) kg.   Dose quality index DQI is based on the correlation between CT dose index (CTDI) and patient diameter, described by an exponential fit function shown in the figure below, like SSDE. In contrast to SSDE which was investigated to estimate patient dose based on CTDI and a patient size dependent conversion factor, the DQI is defined as ratio of data included in an area around the exponential fit (in %), shown in subfigure below.   As a result the DQI helps identifying overstepping the individually necessary exposition below the well-established DRL and moreover supports the universal precept of exposure optimization considering the ALARA-principle.   For large-scale benchmarking using analytic skills and big data from dose management systems, it would be necessary to implement exact diameter measurement over all types of devices. Within our daily business as medical physicists the DQI can be used in addition to the DRL system.   The poster session takes place tomorrow, 13.09.24 at 14:00 h by Dr. N.
