In 1960, 🌿David Latimer🌿 embarked on a remarkable journey by creating a sealed glass bottle terrarium. Little did he know it would become a symbol of resilience and sustainability. 🌍 Over decades, this miniature ecosystem thrived without external intervention. 🌱 Despite no watering since 1972, it flourished within its sealed environment, showcasing the power of nature. 🌿✨ David's meticulous setup included compost, water, and spiderwort seeds within a custom ten-gallon bottle. 🔍 Sealed and placed in sunlight, the terrarium harnessed photosynthesis to sustain itself. 🌞💧 Through photosynthesis, plants released oxygen and moisture while absorbing carbon dioxide, creating a self-sustaining cycle. 🔄 This phenomenon, captured within a sealed bottle, echoes nature's ability to preserve and regenerate. 🌿💚 This extraordinary creation has garnered global attention, including a feature in the Daily Mail. 📰 Its home within the Latimer family's space in Cranleigh, Surrey, holds decades of natural history and wonder. 🏡 Chris Beardshaw, a renowned garden designer, highlighted the terrarium's significance in understanding nature's resilience. 🌿🔬 He likened it to NASA's efforts in creating self-sustaining ecosystems in space, showcasing plants' pivotal role in life support systems. 🚀🌿 Indeed, plants are not just life-giving but also cleansing agents, purifying the air and sustaining life in unexpected places. 🌍🌱 This enduring terrarium serves as a testament to nature's ingenuity and our potential to coexist sustainably with our planet. 🌿💫

Space has always fascinated me. As a child growing up in the 80's , starting with Star Trek (Yes , I saw the transition from Black and White to Colour), then Project UFO and finally Cosmos by Carl Sagan. These series were all about unleashing the imagination about the sheer infiniteness of space. Much later I saw the video about the Pale Blue Dot -Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of Earth taken on February 14, 1990, by the Voyager 1 space probe from an unimaginable distance of 6 billion kilometers. It was this picture that led Carl Sagan to say "Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand" On World Asteroid Day - let us take 2 important messages for all of us 1. While we live our daily lives let us not forget that how insignificant our triumphs & troubles are in the vastness and eternity of space 2.Let's do our bit to preserve our home - the Earth. There is no other. WhiteSpace Consulting & Capability Building https://lnkd.in/gCRfQErv
In silent orbit, I traverse the vast expanse, A witness to humanity's intricate dance. From afar, I've seen your triumphs and fears, Your laughter, your sorrow, across the years. Yet heed this plea from a silent stone, Your fragile home, not meant to be alone. Cherish its beauty, protect its grace, For in its embrace lies your sacred space. #SpaceDiscovery #AsteroidResearch #SpaceExploration #SpaceSafety #SpaceRocks #Astronomy #CelestialBodies #SpaceScience #ImpactRisk

I attended a fascinating workshop last week hosted by the European Commission on the "EU Space Label", which could cover three dimensions of space safety, environment and dark and quiet skies. Some illuminating details presented on both the draft concept of the space label but also its potential institutional implementation. I particularly appreciate the willingness of DEFIS to engage on the Dark and Quiet Skies topic. 👏 Here are some details from the preparatory study. 👇 #spacegovernance #spacesustainability #astronomy
