Most cities and towns state that there needs to be more housing to accommodate those who want to live in their downtowns, or the lack of built-out space holds back economic development. Considering the availability of vacant space and the urgent need to prioritize adaptive reuse as a climate strategy, creating and preserving housing units in existing built space should be a focus for any community seeking to address this affordable housing and commercial space crisis. While historic preservation is often cast as an impediment to housing creation, numerous studies indicate that historic preservation can be accordant with increased density, community preservation, and equitable outcomes. Preservationists and community development leaders should be at the table working on a collaborative approach to reducing barriers to affordable housing developments and educating community members on the role of preservation and adaptive reuse and its benefits. Let The Grassroots Historian help get your historic building nominated to the National Historic Register. This can open doors for grant funds for adaptive reuse projects and preservation tax credits. Well, I'd love to see a further dive into the public policies, local governance, education, and financial institutions including the access to capital investment to reveal what are the consistent and real barriers to the racial wealth gap in New Orleans. This information is always hard to digest but also a temperature check on why we all need to do better for New Orleans and its people. Or is this just what it is and we accept it. Is it just racism, generations of oppression? What are the specific policies, programs addressing this? How does this show up in our local schools, government, public programs? The racial wealth gap in New Orleans is not solely a result of historical racism and oppression but is perpetuated by ongoing systemic issues. Addressing these requires a multifaceted approach involving policy reforms, community engagement, and targeted programs. It's essential to continue analyzing and addressing these barriers to create a more equitable future for all residents of New Orleans. #equityinneworleans
