On 17th October, let's honour the remarkable achievements of Millicent Grant QC (Hon), who made history in 2017 as the first non-white President of a legal professional membership organisation. As President of the Chartered Institute for Legal Executives (CILEx), Millicent has been a trailblazer advocating for diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. With over thirty years of experience as a Chartered Legal Executive, Millicent's dedication and contributions have been recognised widely. She was awarded the UK Diversity Legal Awards ‘Black Solicitors Network Lawyer of the Year’ in 2017. She became the first Chartered Legal Executive to be appointed an Honorary Queen’s Counsel in 2020. 👏 In an interview with Leducate, Millicent emphasised the importance of increasing awareness of different routes into the legal profession, highlighting that "qualifying as a CILEx Lawyer gives access to the legal profession regardless of a person’s social background and circumstances." 🏛️⚖️ Speaking to Lawcareers.net, she shared her vision for a more inclusive legal landscape: “As a Black woman, I know only too well how difficult it can be to make it in the legal profession. I am a testament to what can be achieved, but unfortunately, I remain in the minority. Today we honor Juneteenth and celebrate the emancipation and freedom of Black people once enslaved. White supremacy was interwoven with the founding and history of the U.S., our capital, and DC. The nation’s capital was established on land annexed from Potomac slave plantations. Enslaved African Americans constructed the White House and the Capitol. For their forced labor, enslaved African Americans received no wages, while the government paid their enslavers. Washington, DC was also a bustling thoroughfare for the slave trade, with traffickers selling enslaved African Americans throughout the South. https://lnkd.in/dyHwN9h8 Today—160 years after the Civil War—there are resurgent forces glorifying our history of slavery. Just one month ago, in May 2024 Shenandoah County School Board voted to rename two Virginia public schools after Confederate Generals who fought to keep African Americans in bondage. In June 2024 the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights went to court on behalf of the VA NAACP and five Shenandoah high school students—to challenge the School Board’s action to take Shenandoah backward in time. The online panel event on Wednesday, 24th January was a master class on the right to protest. For law students, academics, practitioners, in house lawyers, case workers, and policy advisors, the chance to hear from the top lawyers and organisations in the field was not to be missed. The scope and reach of the recent legislative measures, the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 and the Public Order Act 2023, were discussed, as were the societal shifts impacting the use of protest as a means of effecting change. Key cases, from Tabernacle and Cuadrilla, to the most recent such as the Colston 4, the Stansted 15 and Insulate Britain were explored and vital insights drawn. The impact of the current landscape on the right to protest and the rule of law was placed under the microscope. On the panel were: • Kirsty Brimelow KC of Doughty Street Chambers • Raj Chada of Hodge Jones & Allen • Akiko Hart, Director of Liberty • Tyrone Steele, Senior Project Lawyer at JUSTICE James Harper, General Counsel of Global Nexis Solutions and Executive Sponsor of the Rule of Law and CSR at LexisNexis, moderated the discussion. For all law undergraduates thinking of entering our essay competition, the panel provided an exceptional analysis of where we are today, and the challenges faced by both citizens and lawyers, set in the context of fundamental rights. A except from her remarks is quoted below: "Juneteenth stands as a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against racism, particularly the institutional and structural racism that underpinned slavery and continues to permeate our healthcare, our workplaces, and our educational systems to this day. It is a day to reflect on the long struggle for freedom and equality faced by Black people in the United States. While we acknowledge the progress made since 1865, we must also recognize the persistent challenges and injustices that remain. As lawyers, we have a profound responsibility to commit ourselves to the fight for civil rights and equal protection for all under the law. We must work to ensure that our society continues to progress forward towards true equality and justice, preventing any regression into old prejudices and inequalities."
