Our President/GCEO, Owen Omogiafo OON delivered an insightful keynote address at the Nigeria Energy Summit (Nigeria Energy) yesterday. During her address, she highlighted the crucial role of Public-Private Partnerships in driving Africa’s energy transition. Despite Africa’s vast natural resources, millions still face energy poverty, a challenge we are committed to addressing. With public/private partnerships (PPPs), enabling policies, infrastructure development, and sustainable innovation, we can achieve energy sufficiency, and power Africa’s future. Excellent analysis from Africa Centre for Energy Policy - certain worth reading for anyone interested in #ghana and African energy sector reforms and related practical recommendations. Key quote: "Despite substantial investments in power distribution infrastructure, technical and commercial losses in Ghana’s power sector have risen from 24% to about 30% between 2014 and 2021. This occurrence underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reforms and improved management practices in power distribution." In other words: Major reforms have already taken place, but lots of work remains; not least in the continent-wide challenge area of losses. This is not just about making public utilities viable; it's as much about efficient energy use and #climatechange Marcus Courage Wilfred (Wilf) Mwamba Dave Beer Acha Leke

With mix feelings for closing such an incredible project, I have participated at the celebration of the final steering committee meeting of our EU-funded project “Enhancement of the Policy, Legal and Regulatory Environment and Capacity Building for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency” in Zambia. The project Team Leader, Alexander Filippov, presented the main achievements from the past 6 years to the project’s key stakeholders and outlined recommendations to further advancing renewable and efficient energy in Zambia. 🇿🇲 Primary objectives of this project include: 📄 Policy and Framework Development: Supporting public institutions in Zambia to revise and enhance policies, along with institutional, legal, and regulatory frameworks for unlocking the potential of renewable energy and to increase energy efficiency throughout the country. ⚡️ Capacity Building: Fostering development and communication of skills among both public and private sector stakeholders to empower local actors to ensure a long-term, cost-effective, reliable, and sustainable energy supply. 🌿 Programme Estimate: Covers complementary capacity by building to develop sustainable renewable energy solutions as well as awareness for campaigns to provide information to public and private organisations about renewable energy and energy efficiency. 🔗 Learn more about this program on DT Global’s website: https://ow.ly/ilcg30sEVz6 #WeAreDTGlobal #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #EnergyEfficiency #EuropeanUnion #Zambia #IWork4DTGlobal

Productive meeting today with H.E. Alex K. Wachira, Principal Secretary of Kenya’s Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, focusing on crucial opportunities to upscale renewable energy for expanding access in Kenya: 1. Bridging the energy access gap with affordable, clean, and reliable solutions by leveraging both on-grid and off-grid technologies 2. Advancing clean cooking initiatives by incorporating them directly into electrification plans 3. Implementing energy-efficient green solutions for institutions (schools, hospitals, prisons) by integrating renewable energy systems and promoting sustainable resource management practices We discussed how the #G7 Energy for Growth initiative, aimed at generating a pipeline of bankable clean energy projects in Africa, presents a timely opportunity to address the continent's pressing needs. This initiative could significantly enhance access to financing for sustainable energy solutions in Kenya. Looking forward to continued partnership for driving Kenya's #EnergyRevolution. #AEF24 #EnergyForDevelopment

⚡ Strengthening the grid, improving resilience and thereby improving energy access and reducing the need for back-up diesel generation. ⚡ Supporting regional integration and trade, and thereby improving the conditions for the whole region to increase the share of renewable energy generation. Swedfund International and European Union provide funding to advance the Malawi-Zambia Interconnector - a 330/400kV cross-border transmission line (interconnector) that spans approximately 184km between Zambia and Malawi. This supports the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) and the respective national utilities in their work to carry out the necessary technical, environmental and social impact studies to progress the project towards an investment decision, an important step towards improving the region's energy security and resilience. ✅ Today marks the kickoff for the Environmental Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) funded by Swedfund’s #ProjectAccelerator. The assessments will help mitigate potential risks and ensure that the project benefits local communities. Stay tuned for more updates. 🇸🇪🇪🇺 Southern African Power Pool, ESCOM Malawi Limited, Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO), European Investment Bank (EIB), African Development Bank Group #Swedfund #EU #Globalgateway #SAPP #Malawi #Zambia #Interconnector #ProjectAccelerator #Energy #Infrastructure

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the Power Forum 2024. It was a great opportunity to connect with industry leaders and discuss the future of Uganda's electricity sector. Three key takeaways emerged: 1. Stakeholder Involvement: Collaboration among all stakeholders is crucial for the sustainable development of power generation projects. 2. Innovative Finance: Exploring innovative financing mechanisms is essential to bridge the funding gap and accelerate the transition to a sustainable energy future. 3. "Until every Ugandan has access to reliable electricity, we cannot claim surplus capacity." #Sustainability #InnovativeFinance

REA And Mercy Corps Partner To Enhance Electricity Access In Rural Nigeria The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and Mercy Corps have formalized a strategic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the REA Corporate Headquarters in Abuja. This collaboration seeks to bolster electricity cooperatives and improve electricity access across rural communities in Nigeria. The MoU outlines several key objectives, including the provision of capacity building for the Rural Electricity Users Cooperative Society (REUCS), technical assistance for the Africa Mini-grid Programme (AMP), and support in developing sustainable business models for energy projects such as the Korean Energy Project. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, Managing Director/CEO of REA, highlighted the significance of […] Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/dt8B2CrW #solarenergy #alternativeenergy #solarpv #pvsolar #photovoltaic #cleanenergy #cleantech #climatechange #africa #electricity #mercycorps #nigeria #nigeria’sruralelectrificationagency #renewableenergy

In the short to medium term, electricity generation and distribution needs to be decentralised and localized to community level. This allows for electrification despite struggling T&D, helps power reach far-flung areas, and protects users from national inefficiencies. It also helps us design interventions to drive rural industrialization (and the resulting employment, and higher farmer incomes) which is key for economic growth. The youth bulge, our producer economies, and vast renewable energy resources are opportunities that are convergent and should be leveraged for green industrialization. The goal however is that in the long-term, for electricity access to be borderless. The 100GW flowing down the Congo River should be distributable to East and Southern Africa, Cameroon's vast hydro resources should serve the region frictionlessly. This was my message on my first panel slot representing INENSUS gmbh at the Future of Energy Show in Johannesburg.
