🗒 The American Chemistry Council have released their finding on the Economic Sentiment for the industry in Q4 of 2023 🗽 A few points of note (this is not an exhaustive list): * Manufacturers have faced declines in activity, orders, and production in Q4, but a future improvement on the demand side is expected. *Conversely, Supply chain pressures have eased, and production costs showed mixed trends as labor costs rose, but manufacturers expect lower input/raw material and energy costs as we progress further *Employment levels declined, but capital spending increased * Regulatory burden was noted as being significant On that last topic, this exemplifies the challenges of regulatory teams across the industry (not just in the US) : the regulatory burden will not have a direct correlation with the economic conditions, but more so with the governmental context, and will understandably keep increasing as the industry is now more in phase with the effects of chemicals on the environment, human health and is looking to decrease its negative footprint. Under-hiring in regulatory departments will however stretch already busy teams to the limit. The chemical industry's challenge is a complex one for 2024 onwards, but also a significant one with the new demand which will foreseeably come for an industry that reinvents itself in phase with today's green and Co2 neutral considerations. If you are regulatory professional in this field, this does not mean there are no jobs, (indeed quite the opposite) but perfecting your skills in a specific set of regulations will be even more crucial to help ease this Regulatory Burden Want to discuss this confidentially? 📧 benjamin@consultsearch.co.uk

📊 ACC's U.S. Economy and Chemical Industry report for Q1 2024 🏭 After a frankly laborious performance yesterday by the England team, it is time to look at another labour market that seems to be faring a bit better after a a very harsh year in 2023. As we move into mid-year, the U.S. economy is continuing to show resilience on the Chemical front, despite some obvious challenges that have been passed on from last year (higher interest costs, regulatory impact, global trade unknowns, volatile economic climate..etc) So what are some the key points from this report? ✋ Demand Recovery New orders for U.S. chemicals rebounded strongly in Q1, with 57% of manufacturers reporting increased order volumes. Expectations for continued gains in domestic and foreign orders over the next six months are high. 💵 Mixed Production Costs Energy costs have eased, but transportation and raw materials costs rose in Q1. Labor costs also continued to climb. 📒 Rising Regulatory Burden A significant 58% of manufacturers reported an increased regulatory burden in Q1, with 67% expecting further rises. This trend poses a challenge to expanding production and supporting national priorities. The main takeaway from this article (which is for disclaimer about a month old but doesn't seem to have aged too badly) is the cautious optimism taking place in the industry, with an anticipated rebound for the chemical industry. This ties with the expectation of both the U.S. and global economy to improve over the next six months, with strengthened demand and accelerated activity levels. 🎤 “For the first time since we started conducting the survey, companies are signaling optimism about economic conditions,” said Emily Sanchez, Director of Economics & Data Analytics at the ACC. “Addressing cost and regulatory challenges will be key to sustaining this positive trend.” Full article below, and take a chance to look at ACC industry outlook for 2024, which I shall link in the comments Happy Friday!

I find this report really worrysome, especially the bar chart and table on the last page "Chemicals production growth for main countries", providing yoy growth in % for 2022 and 2023. For two years in a row now, the entire world is loosing #chemicalproduction to #China, where chemical production in 2023 grew by almost 10% (Jan-Nov numbers). The loss of chemical production in the #EU27 accelerates 2023 vs 2022 even. Another chart in the report shows, how this is particularly profound in petrochemicals, polymers and chemicals (less so in specialties and consumer chemicals). HOWEVER, chemical production works well when process streams are tightly integrated. And it is not resilient, when raw materials need to be shipped over the entire planet and then find their way through bottle necks like the Suez channel - as we experience it these days, AGAIN.
Our December 2023 Chemical Trends Report is out 📊. 2023 was a challenging year. Sales and production dropped by 8.7% for the first 11 months, reflecting weakened EU economy confidence. 📉 Factors like high energy costs and reduced demand are affecting Europe's chemical industry. Chinese imports pose a growing challenge, and we anticipate this trend to continue. 🌍 While some chemical sub-sectors showed a slight uptick in November 2023, a full recovery remains uncertain. 2024 may bring gradual growth.
