Today’s announcement from the four Governments of the United Kingdom that a deposit return scheme will be introduced in 2027 is a positive step towards a circular economy for packaging. There are many international examples of well-designed, industry-led DRS increasing recycling rates and reducing litter – and we will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the UK scheme meets those high standards.   Paul Graham, our Managing Director in Great Britain, said:   “Britvic has long advocated for an aligned, well-designed deposit return scheme in the UK because we believe it can deliver a truly circular economy, and ensure that great packaging never becomes waste. Getting the right price for materials is the whole game in recycling. Yesterday was a wonderful day in Albany supporting two major bills that will change our lives. The Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act (S4246-b and A5322-b) and the Bigger Better Bottle Bill (S237b and A6353.) The first bill will reduce the amount of single use plastics packaging by 50% in 12 years and will prohibit packaging from containing 19 toxic substances!  The latter will increase the refundable deposit to $.10 and would require brands to have 25% of their production in refillable bottles by 2030. These are big bold moves that are necessary to reduce our dependance on plastics. Redemption rates in most states with bottle bills decreased in 2023 compared with the previous year, according to data from the Container Recycling Institute. The numbers reflect a downward redemption rate trend since 2017.
