Joyce Blankenship, who is an 83-year-old grandmother of fours had died inside her home in February 2024 when a single brush fire exploded in size in just 24 hours, racing across the landscape, burning her home and others in Stinnett, Texas. Fueled by 50 to 60 mph winds and dry grasses, the fire grew so fast that it surrounded the truck of Cindy Owen, 44, where she was working more than 40 miles east of Blankenship's home. Fire is now a fact of life for those living in the Western United States, with impacts that can be felt across the entire country. With many more people experiencing the effects of wildfire and smoke in their own backyard, there is a rising interest in large-scale solutions that can help achieve sustainable, long-term defense against wildfire challenges. Supported by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Wildfire Resilience Initiative, the Tahoe Sierra Regional Wildfire Resilience Collaborative - a partnership between the Climate & Wildfire Institute, University of Montana, Tahoe-Central Sierra Initiative, and The Stewardship Network - is working to develop tools and strategies to increase wildfire resilience across 2.4 million acres of Sierra Nevada forests and watersheds. “Wildfire is in the social consciousness in a way that it never has been before,” according to Chris Anthony, former Chief Deputy Director at CAL FIRE. Anthony is supporting this and other projects which advance landscape-scale resilience across the West. Based on firsthand experience with the 2021 Caldor Fire, he cites the critical function that millions of dollars invested - to support fuels reduction, community preparedness, and mitigation work - provided in preventing devastating damage to the Tahoe Basin. He is now working to replicate the success of these efforts in other areas across the state. Great article and also they have an informative podcast called Good Fire. Highly recommend. I’ve seen both side of the burnt grass. One side a community is working towards traditional practices, education to the next generation and applying FireSmart Programs while taking charge of breaking down the silos with gorvernment by building stronger, more collaborative relationships between departments. On the other side of the burnt grass I’ve seen the catastrophic dangers of wildfires in communities not being prepared nor ready. Spinks highlights the historical role of Indigenous fire-keepers and their traditional practices like cultural burns. He argues that the loss of these practices led to inadequate wildfire prevention by provincial managers. He proposes establishing an Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area, managed by Indigenous guardians, to develop fire management plans, conduct cultural burns, and use traditional knowledge for better wildfire management. 🌲 🔥 Wildfire mitigation is absolutely critical, and I applaud 👏 all parties working on it. I'm wondering the chances of the "Fix Our Forests Act" ultimately becoming law and, importantly, how impactful it would be if passed. Are the actions on target? 🎯 From the TD World story posted here, the FOFA purports to streamline regulation and response as follows: ✅ Simplify and expedite environmental reviews to reduce costs and planning times for critical forest management projects while maintaining rigorous environmental standards; ✅ Reduce the amount of frivolous litigation that delays urgent forest management projects; ✅ Promote federal, state, tribal, and local collaboration by creating a new Fireshed Center and codifying the Shared Stewardship initiative; ✅ Make communities more resilient to wildfire by establishing a Community Wildfire Risk Reduction Program and a Community Wildfire Defense Research Program, and; ✅ Allow federal land managers to use emergency authorities to carry out landscape-scale projects management projects on the most at-risk firesheds. #FixOurForestsActs is supported by numerous entities including utilities, conservation groups, and industry advocacy groups. This support alone seems pretty impressive. Will these efforts to streamline action move the needle? What other actions are needed?
