Douglas Hyde was born on January 17, 1860 in County Roscommon, Ireland. A distinguished Gaelic scholar and writer, Hyde founded the Gaelic League, urging for the preservation and extension of the Irish language. Hyde became the first president of the Republic of Ireland in 1938, and died on July 12, 1949 in Dublin.
