There has been a growing conversation around integrating oral health and primary care to enhance overall health outcomes. However, many individuals still visit separate dental and primary care providers, or sometimes, neither. At the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) in Boston, Massachusetts, this talk has translated into action through the Nurse Practitioner & Dentist (NPD) Model for Primary Care. This innovative model fosters interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) and interprofessional education (IPE) by merging primary care services delivered by a nurse practitioner (NP) within an academic dental practice setting. #Healthcare #Innovation #InterprofessionalCollaboration

You can help parents and carers promote good oral health at home by providing general tips and guidance. However, avoid giving individual or specific advice; they should consult healthcare professionals, such as dentists, for medical advice. Children should visit the dentist when their first tooth appears or by age one. NHS dental services are free for all children under 18. In meetings with parents and carers, you can: - Share this information - Ask if they have taken their child to the dentist - Encourage dental visits if the child has their first tooth or is over one year old To promote oral health, distribute posters and leaflets in entryways, during sessions, and in communal areas. Refer families with oral health concerns to their dentist or the NHS website for local dentists. For urgent care, advise contacting NHS 111 if their dentist lacks emergency appointments.

We’re working to ensure that policymakers don’t overlook the role that mixed practices play within the dental sector. Most UK dental practices, and the majority of our 6,700 Denplan member practices, operate under a mixed dental practice model, combining a mix of private paying patients with some NHS patients. Private and mixed dentistry plays an important role in helping ensure the good oral and general health of the entire population and supports access to NHS services. With a general election just around the corner, we’re calling on the next Government to.. 1. Provide a deadline for the consultation on further reforms to the dental contract, in line with the commitment made in the Dental Recovery Plan. 2. Acknowledge the vital role played by dental nurses and the wider dental team and provide further guidance on how training pathways can help support use of the whole dental team. 3. Provide guidance on how they will assess whether plans to improve access to dental services are reaching those who are most vulnerable in society. 4. Lead a public health campaign designed to communicate the importance of oral health in connection to overall health.

Importance of PREVENTION in oral health for Seniors in Care Facilities. The key lies in equipping caregivers 🦷 (Family Members and healthcare professionals). With the necessary training to support patients in maintaining oral hygiene routines, even in challenging circumstances, preventive dental care can be achieved. For patients who may face challenges in Non-Traditional dental care settings such as Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF), Senior Care Homes and Home Bound Seniors, regular in-service training is critical and mandated. It is crucial to ensure that the entire care facility is aligned to support dental health initiatives. Focus on empowering healthcare providers like registered Dental Hygienists (RDHAP) and Nurses to champion preventive measures. By emphasizing preventive care, we can reduce the need for extensive and expensive dental procedure.   Integrate preventive measures into daily Oral Health Practice for Geriatric Patients.

Suggestion #3 Lock in an Unwavering Appreciation and Respect for Everyone on the Team I can’t even count how many times I’ve heard it said: “Patient experience is about nursing. We need to double down our efforts in that arena to get the results we are looking for.” And while there can be some truth in that, it does not factor in the whole picture. No matter how you slice it, everyone involved in a patient’s care is an integral part of their experience and therefore must be treated as such. This cannot be just lip service. It must be genuine, consistent, and built into the culture. Every single conversation and encounter had by a patient, family member, or friend contributes to the ultimate bigger picture experience they walk away with when all is said and done. And for that reason, how every single person engages with a patient is equally important. A warm patient and/or family interaction contributes immeasurably to their experience, whether it is with a member of the transport staff, a radiology technician, the clerk who scheduled their appointment, or the attending physician. The key here is to truly respect that these are team efforts that require everyone to be pulling intentionally and wholeheartedly in the same direction. Every cog in the system matters and can make or break the patient’s experience without exception. Calling all dental practitioners who work in the aged and home care sectors. The Rules for the new Aged Care Act outlines the care and services that will be available to older people under the new laws. Sadly, dental practitioners are excluded from providing any services. Nurses are required to provide assistance with, or provision of support for, personal hygiene, including oral health management. Without expert guidance, assistance and training from dental practitioners, nurses will continue to struggle with the complex dental needs of older persons. Oral hygiene needs, support and management get more complex as we age, not less. Mobility challenges can restrict access to care. Our nurses already have substantial workloads. Oral health support is a critical quality of life issue for older people in care. Good oral health practices and support in aged care form the basis of improving overall wellbeing, general and mental health outcomes. Legislation needs to reflect this.
