An intriguing fact about small-size drones is that it demands the very core of aerodynamics. Their compact size opens up new topics of discussion in how we study lift and flow around them. One of them is how we would deduce the Lift Coefficient (Cd) for such small-sized drone. A conventional approach to this matter is to assume a reasonable Cd value that would roughly represent the whole drone regardless if there would be any consequential contributions of drag from certain parts of the rotorcraft. As I was given the opportunity to undertake a drag study on multirotor drones this summer, I decided to do some tests to see whether the above statement holds true by designing and testing a couple of drone airframe designs. I intend to find out if there is a certain airframe design that would generate substantially more drag. From a series of wind tunnel tests conducted. I have reached the conclusion that at 0 0-degree angle of attack, a square-shaped airframe produced double the amount of drag compared to a circle and hexagon. Interestingly, at a steeper angle of attack with increasing velocity, the values of Cd for all 3 shapes seem to be converging to a similar value. A behaviour which has not been seen before in any drone analysis as far as I am aware of. Well, there would be only 2 possible explanations for this, either there is something wrong with the way I processed my data or maybe there are some factors that I did not take into consideration. In the end, I am grateful and honoured to be given the trust to conduct this research by Manchester University’s Summer Internship program. This is the best joystick I've ever used! During my internship at PRIO I had the opportunity to start an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) operation where I learned how to direct the ROV's thrusters and test the refined joystick calibration. In addition to having more than 10 control screens as in the photo, it was a robot that reaches a depth of more than 2km in water and has two hydraulic #robotic manipulators that could be installed on a spaceship! It was an experience of literally millions. It is worth mentioning that most space probes, including the historic #Voyager I and II, and especially the #Mars rovers #Spirit and #Opportunity, are remotely controlled, but with less refinement of degrees of freedom compared to an #ROV. With the advancement of space missions, increasingly robust remote cooperation becomes necessary and that is why current research considers adaptations of ROVs for #space. #engineering #technology

Hello, Connections! I'm glad to share my experience on a 3-week virtual internship at Jet Aerospace Aviation Research Center from 3rd to 20th June 2024. The internship was based on "Drone Surveying and Mapping" where I learned about Drones, their working mechanism, survey data, and mapping technologies. I was first taught the basics of drones and their classifications. Then we were given detailed training on operating a drone through remote applications and collecting data. Then we were introduced to data samples and how to map them using various software. Then came the most exciting part of surveying. We've learned to survey some areas from the imported maps through some of the amusing applications like 'ArcMap'. I also presented at a national-level conference conducted by the Jet Aerospace Aviation Research Center on "Innovation in Drone Surveying and Mapping Technology".
