Do you hear that fast drumming? Look no further than this Pileated Woodpecker, a year-round inhabitant of mature deciduous and coniferous forests in parts of the eastern United States, the West Coast, and southern Canada. These striking forest birds make deep holes in decaying trees and downed logs as they search for their prey: carpenter ants. Snags and other dead and dying trees provide habitat for various birds, including other species of woodpeckers and nuthatches, so leaving them on your property provides foraging and nesting opportunities for our avian friends. #forestry #birds #forestmanagement #landmanagement

Dense understory has a PLACE… BUT, when all the understory is so dense you can hardly walk through it, or as not seen on camera so sparse because of canopy close-in… Wildlife is going to be minimally present. So what do you do? You cut timber. Profiting from timber and improving wildlife habitat are not exclusive of one another. As good stewards of the land, were meant to do BEST practices. Does that mean everything is equal and to met at the exact same time? No! There are opportunity costs to every decision and every action. SOME wildlife are going to miss the more mature landscape we had… But I can tell you from experience, we have witnessed 5x MORE wildlife present on our land within 12 months of our harvest than the 4 years of the mature forest we’ve owned and the 9 years we’ve watched it… Harvesting is NOT “destruction” Its often the catalyst for new and thriving life. #landandladies #logging #youronlineforester #sustainability #forestry #forester #forestmanagement #christianbusiness #faithfamilyforest #wildlifeconservation #conservation #wildlifelover #timber #stewardship

We were ALWAYS meant to work the land if we were meant to work even a most-perfect garden (Genesis 2:15) And cutting timber IS good land stewardship which provided many great benefits to support the land to stay IN trees but also wildlife! Nature isn’t a one-size fits all approach… Therefore all wildlife don’t need the exact same things. Cutting timber OFTEN improves wildlife habitat and diversity opportunities. So even if your timber harvest is primarily for financial reasons… its important to remember and recognize the positive impact it will also have for different wildlife species! So my question for you… Are YOU intentionally working your forestlands? Are you wondering about cutting timber? I can help you with that! And in fact I have a FREE new training to show you 2 ways your land might be costing you money and 3 steps you can immediately take! Will I see you there April 23rd? #landandladies #youronlineforester #faithfamilyforest #forester #forestry #stewardship #christianity #logging #landowner #sustainability #wildlife #conservation #inheritance

Last spring, our skilled forest team carried out an ornithological inventory with Victor Plotton in our La Chapelle Saint Remy forest near Le Mans in France. 🌳 But what is an ornithological inventory? 🤔 When we're talking about #ornithology, we're, of course, talking about birds! 🐦 The inventory is a study where we observe and count the bird activity in our forests to help establish which bird species are already present in our forests, if the nesting boxes we have installed were inhabited, and if there are issues present in the area and adapt the management and our forestry actions accordingly. ⏭️ What's next? We will return to the site to carry out a new inventory again this year using the same protocol to measure the effectiveness of the projects in place as part of our close-to-nature #forestry management. 📍At La Chapelle Saint Remy, we're lucky that the #biodiversity is flourishing, as the area was clear-cut before we took over the management in 2020, which often has large consequences for the local fauna. This is great news, as it means that the feathered inhabitants have found habitats in our #forests thanks to the various actions we launched. 👉 Let Victor explain the work we carried out! #nbs #reforestation

⇻ 𝗜𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗜𝗘𝗟𝗗 ⇺ When it comes to wildlife, foresters need to keep an eye out for the different species present on a property and make note of them and their location on said property. While administering a timber harvest, there a management restrictions to protect endangered and threatened species. Being on the lookout and knowing what is present on any given property is crucial for both a management and conservation prospective. . . . #steigerwaldt #landmanagement #forestry #conservation #ecosystem

Invasive species pose a significant threat to forest ecosystems nationwide, competing with native flora for vital resources. While some invasive species may appear benign, many cause substantial damage, necessitating proactive management strategies. In southeastern Florida, foresters confront the challenges posed by three particularly troublesome invaders, demanding decisive action to curb their spread. In our recent post, we highlighted the early flowering of horse chestnut trees (Aesculus hippocastanum) and the consequent appearance of pests. To combat the chestnut moth, we collaborated with univ. prof. PhD Boris Hrašovec and introduced traps with liquid glue. Our goal was to protect the trees’ health and promote their growth. 👉 As a further measure, the innovative addition of Boris Hrasovec, who added a protective mesh to the traps to protect birds and other small animals from sticking on liquid glue. 👇 #urbanforestry #arboriculture #horticulture #climatechange #sustainability #trees

Planning to attend the SAF National Convention? Early-bird rates end July 31st! The convention hotel block is booked, but there are still rooms at surrounding hotels for a discounted block rate! Link in our LinkTree!! Did you know that the Lark Bunting is the state bird of Colorado? Endemic to the grasslands and shrubsteppe of North America, these birds have lost a significant chunk of their range due to urban sprawl, agriculture, and climate change. While there aren't towering trees within their habitat, there are shrubby woody stems, such as big sagebrush and bitterbrush. After receiving grant funds through Senate Bill 762 and the Oregon Department of Forestry Landscape Resiliency Program, a conservation group contacted AFM's Columbia Gorge District to implement fire resiliency and Oregon White Oak restoration on 194 contiguous acres in the eastern Cascades. The work began in the late summer/early fall of 2022 and finished in 2023. Due to a high mortality rate in the stand and significant conifer encroachment, foresters implemented a thinning prescription to reduce competition around oaks and standing and ladder fuels. Slash piles were also burned in the fall to remove logging debris from the landscape. Since these oak woodlands are vital ecosystems to native plant and animal species, it was crucial to implement a solid management plan to protect them. #forestmanagement #forestry #fireprevention #fireresiliency

This diversity in vegetation can attract a wide array of wildlife species, each with its own specific winter habitat requirements. • Successional Stages: Forestry mulching doesn't necessarily remove all vegetation from an area. Instead, it selectively clears certain trees and underbrush while leaving others intact. This results in a patchwork of different successional stages. For instance, some areas may have newly mulched and disturbed soil where pioneer plant species can colonize. These areas can attract species like rabbits and ground-nesting birds that prefer open spaces and early successional habitats. • • Edge Effects: The transition zones between mulched areas and untouched forest can create ecotones, or edge habitats. These edge habitats are often rich in biodiversity because they combine elements of both adjacent ecosystems. For winter wildlife, these edges can provide a variety of resources. Birds, for example, may forage for seeds in the remaining shrubs at the forest edge while using the open areas for hunting insects. • Microclimates: Forestry mulch can influence microclimates. The mulch layer can help retain moisture and create slightly warmer and more stable conditions compared to bare soil. This can be attractive to animals like reptiles and amphibians that need specific temperature ranges for winter hibernation. ⏩Check out our mulcher inventory at www.edgeequipment.com or talk to one of our specialists at 780-455-3343 today! - - - #heavyequipment #excavator #heavymachine #landclearing #plow #plowlife #propertymaintenance #marketing #moneysaving #seo #heavymachinery #heavyequipmentnation #bigmachines #builtforlife #vegetationmanagement #treeremoval #facts #iykyk #knowledge #growth #didyouknow #facts #factoftheday #coolfacts #ifyouknowyouknow #funfacts #sciencefacts #forestryequipment #forestrylife #forestmachinesinaction
