Foresters in San Jacinto County, Texas, are in active clean-up mode after surveying the destruction left behind by Hurricane Beryl. After Beryl touched down in July, Andrew Boughton, Forester in Lufkin, TX, shared these photos where approximately 100-150 trees were uprooted. After bucking the rootball/stump off the log, they will use an active timber sale contract to retain revenue from downed timber. Once the stumps/rootballs are burned or buried, foresters will blade with a dozer to ensure there is no erosion or pooling water in the holes. #forestry #forestmanagement #landmanagement

⇻ 𝗦𝗔𝗙𝗘𝗧𝗬 𝗔𝗧 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗜𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗪𝗔𝗟𝗗𝗧 ⇺ While it has been nice to have more sunshine and warmer days so early, it does come at a price. The month of February brought us dry, warm weather relative to the month with minimal snow on the ground. This has led to starting March out very dry with no spring melt, which usually provides us with excess water. The result of all of this is that we are entering spring with the potential to see wildfires. Learn some tips to help prevent wildfires and protect yourself here: https://lnkd.in/g7nrCYCy For more information on Wisconsin fire danger, burn restrictions, and wildfires, view the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wisburn site: https://lnkd.in/gpbHRAbT . #steigerwaldt #landmanagement #forestry #conservation #safety

In 2017, a wildfire decimated a client’s trees and, adding insult to injury, led to a pine beetle outbreak. Our foresters completed a salvage harvest in 2021-2022 and reforested the property in the spring of 2022. Foresters planted Western larch, which had excellent growth during last year, ±8”, with some natural ponderosa pine regeneration. There is an abundance of native forbs and grasses growing in the harvest area as well. Our foresters can advise landowners in areas prone to wildfires on fire prevention strategies, salvage, and reforestation, so reach out to us today to protect your land from the devastating effects of wildfires. #forestry #forestmanagement #landmanagement

Autumn is here in New England 🍂 🍁 It’s the perfect time of year to celebrate the glorious Sugar Maple! Known best for its ability to produce sweet sap that can be boiled down for maple syrup and other maple treats, the Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) is also the backbone of New England’s stunning fall foliage. Every National Basketball Association franchise has a court made with Sugar Maple flooring, and the Sugar Maple is the official state tree of Vermont, New York, West Virginia and Wisconsin. In urban areas, Sugar Maple is in decline due to Norway Maple being planted instead. Human activity and pollution are also causing decline. Logging and growth competition in native stands has also reduced populations. Sugar Maple is a slow growing species. Symptoms of sugar maple decline include: Premature yellowing or reddening of leaves, Reduced foliage and twig growth, and Branch dieback in the upper canopy. To help declining maples, you can try: Leaching the soil with fresh water, Applying gypsum to improve soil structure, and Planting a young maple tree nearby. Contact your nearby SavATree office to have a certified arborist help you preserve your trees. Your land, your goals, your why. Dont try to copy someone elses management because they say “this is best.” Because that may be best for THEM, but may not align with your timber situation OR goals. In the end our stewardship efforts reflect our love and responsibility to God. (Colossians 3:23-24) And it doesnt need to make sense to anyone else. This in no way means you shouldnt use PROFESSIONAL advice, but rather ensure the foresters and other natural resource professionals are the right fit to help you reach your specific goals and desires! Do you know what your goals, why, and objective priorities are for your land? #landandladies #sustainableforestry #youronlineforester #christian

Interesting article on the impact of deer browse. What they didn't evaluate is individual seedling/sapling treatment using big game repellent such as #TRICOPRO. If you treat just the #seedling then #ungulates such as #deer have other forage to eat in-between the seedlings. Fencing allows all the other forage such as brush and grasses to flourish and compete against the seedlings. #forestry, #restoration, #reforestation, #wildlife, #planting

It can be overwhelming when you inherit your family forestland… especially if you’ve never participated in the management in the past! We all have desires in our heart of what to do with the land, or what we would like to see happen. - Desires for sustainability! - To uphold the internal responsibility passed down for generations! - To be able to pass it on to the next generation… But as Proverbs 19:2 says, “Desire without knowledge is not good - how much more will hasty feet miss the way!” We must learn to communicate our desires more effectively; our goals more specifically and then we can receive guidance and plans which are accurate to help us reach them! Its hard at first when you dont know what you dont know. But thats what I’m here to help you do: - to ask the right questions; - to find the right resources; - to get the right results. Are you ready to move past feelings? #landandladies #forester #faithfamilyforest #christianity #christianbusiness #forestry #faithbased #land #landownership #forestmanagement #landmanagement #inheritance #overwhelmed

Data Scientist, Circular Economist, Forest Owner that enjoys Environmental Stewardship Addressing the Big Problems Facing Communities, Organizations and Business through small actions and efforts
What is the value of a tree in your yard, town square, city or community? Many times the value is not easily understood yet a tree provides value in many ways. 1 - Co2 Absorption 2 - Shade 3 - Storm Water Run-Off Mitigation 4 - Improve Air Quality 5 - Wildlife Habitat 6 - Reduce Household Energy Consumption The link https://lnkd.in/eXUWjiqJ is a free and amazing tool to understand the value of a tree as well as have great conversations with local municipalities, energy providers and neighbors to plant trees. It allows a conversation about the numbers and facts and figures and how a tree can help improve outcomes for everyone. The Carolina Hemlock pictured below located in Western North Carolina will sequester 500 pounds of Carbon and absorb 27,000 gallons of rainfall over the next 20 years as well as provide a home for multiple species of birds, insects and small mammals. #forestry

But it’s not fair to compare your neighbors highlight successes to your everyday ups and downs. This is true in all areas of life, as well as landownership and management. It can be easy to compare our “just grabbing the reigns” first year of management to someone’s 45th year of consistent activity and “perfected” landscape. Nothing comes overnight, and this is most obvious with land! Land is a longterm game. But I wont say like a marathon anymore… Because that assumes theres an “ending” where you can take the hands off the wheel! No… Its like TRAINING FOR A marathon. Training takes discipline, consistency and intentionality. Easier said than done when it comes to our land when SO MUCH is out of our hands too… And so the best landowners I have grown to respect and recognize fully embrace the principles of Proverbs 3:5-6. Because as many plans as WE make, there are just as many, if not more, curve balls thrown our way. So answer honestly… Are your ducks in a row? And can I help you embrace the pigeon or two thats snuck in too? #landandladies #forester #land #faithfamilyforest #ducksinarow #godsplan #christianity #forestry
