If you deal with strategy in any form, whether it's in the military or in business, the Operational Arch podcast produced by the U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) is a must-listen. In this episode, Craig Broyles discusses the concept of the counterpunch in strategy. Strategy is fundamentally competitive, a tenet rooted in Sun Tzu and driven home by Michael Porter. The pursuit of strategy is iterative, incessantly in search of advantage, and that's where the counterpunch comes into play. As I remind my students, strategy isn't simply an exercise where you choose a path and proceed unobstructed to your goal; it's a knife fight from beginning to end as your rivals mount their opposition.
