Last week, our SHRLG Operating Board were delighted to host a virtual session with Alison Gowen, Group HR Director of AG Barr, where she shared some highlights and learning with us on their journey to design, and soon launch, their Employee Value Proposition (EVP) and employer brand.
With over 75 leaders from across the Scottish HR community in attendance, we were treated to a comprehensive and engaging summary of the work currently being undertaken by Alison and her team in this area.
For those who couldn’t make the session, we’ve summarised some of the key takeaways from the session below:
✅ The importance of having your people strategy in place first and then aligning your EVP with this – they must be integrated and complement each other.
✅ Be clear on why you are working on your EVP – what problem(s) do you want to solve/what do you want to achieve from this exercise? What will success look like and how will you measure this?
✅ Involve your colleagues in the design process – listen and conduct research to understand where you are now. Be prepared to hear things that may make you uncomfortable and get ready to deal with that.
✅ When defining your EVP be authentic – around 60% of an EVP is where you are today, the remaining 40% is aspirational. Remember that you don't have to be the best at everything, for many of us that's impossible. Instead focus on the small things that make you unique – emphasise the importance of these.
✅ It's critical to have senior stakeholder buy-in and support from across the business – this cannot be seen as an HR initiative. You need to aim for it to be seen as adding value to the organisation as a whole and all colleagues having a part in its success.
✅ Don't underestimate the time that designing and implementing an EVP will take. Have a project plan with clear timelines, stakeholders and milestones to keep you on track.
✅ Finally – make sure your EVP is clear and succinct. Ask yourself how a poster in a lift would summarise it.
With over 96% of attendees responding positively to our poll on whether they’d join a future session, it was great to hear the event landed well.
A huge thanks from us to Alison for sharing her time and experience on EVP and employer brand and to those who attended and asked questions and engaged with the topic throughout.
We very much look forward to seeing you at future events, such as the SHRLG conference taking place on 4 September 2024 in Edinburgh, its another not to be missed!
