Been saying this in my post for some months on hotel and restaurants operations. And I concur with Scott, the unfortunate situation in the industry is that far too many lower management have been promoted to “fit the need` of the operation without exposure to the actual floor, all sanctioned by HR. In addition, the constant increase of admin (which should be reviewed annually) has led to managers being stuck in the office, and they are simply not benefiting from operational exposure. Add to this management covering shifts of missing staff and exhaustion and burnout becomes a regular element of the operation. The build up of pressure has led to so many quite capable and good people to leave the industry. If we insist on promoting those who are not ready, then we must commit to mentoring and support to ensure their success.

Seek excellence in your own work and walk that out on the floor and watch how your team naturally will want to align with that kind of leadership. We all have directives and goals in business, and that’s what keeps us moving forward. But if you get excited about the directive and lead by example, your team is more likely to want to join you in that journey. These young leaders are poised to be the future leadership strength of GRT Hotels and Resorts, driving our brand forward as we expand our footprint at a rapid pace—having already opened three new hotels this year! I had the honor of delivering the keynote at the graduation ceremony, and my message focused on the concept of Leadership Without Titles: 1.
