Sharing this thought-provoking op-ed penned by Victoria Crockford for the Coalition to End Women's Homelessness and published on International Women's Day. We were delighted to collaborate closely and provide insights and information for this insightful piece. Vic makes a compelling call for the need to plan and design solutions with a gender lens. "Every year, we invest over $300m in emergency housing grants, on top of significant investment in other housing subsidies. The last census found that 102,123 people identified as experiencing “severe housing deprivation” - the proxy we use for those living unhoused. Of that group, an internationally high number of 50% identified as women. That’s more than 50,000 people. But we have no plan, policy, or funding that recognises the unique challenges and needs of these women." Check out the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gp9TwYbY Thank you Vic for your timely article. We are stronger when we work together to shape the narrative and drive meaningful conversations so that women's homelessness is visible and addressed. #collaboration #thoughtleadership #housingforall #iwd2024

Collective action drives change for economic justice and rights, as evident in the #GenerationEquality Accountability Report of the Economic Justice and Rights Action Coalition that was launched this week at #CSW68. Now more than ever, it is essential to support women's rights and empowerment. The report demonstrates, through compelling evidence, how Commitment Makers advance women's economic empowerment: 📚 440 programmes have been reported to be implemented, along with 135 policies and 406 advocacy initiatives. 👏 83% of commitments are being implemented through new or expanded partnerships, underlining the importance of collective action for achieving #genderequality. 💵 Close to US$33B have been pledged of which US$15B have been secured, showcasing that economic justice and rights are a major area for investment. However, all sectors need to double their efforts. Today, 1 in every 10 women still lives in extreme poverty, and projections indicate 342 million women and girls will not have moved out of extreme poverty by 2030 unless we shift current trends. THE CHALLENGES REMAIN: 2023 was a significant year for women in sports, science, entertainment, and politics. However, studies still reflect high levels of dissatisfaction across the board, soaring rates of homelessness in women over the age of fifty-five, and economic and wealth disadvantages for both single and partnered women raising children. So, what are our options? Women’s Agenda has more: https://bit.ly/41YiE00 #MRFL #HereForYou #FamilyLaw

📌 New Blog Post: The Invisibility of Women's Homelessness International Women's Day is an opportunity to celebrate women, but we also must recognise the challenges that are faced by women. One of the significant challenges to ensuring the needs of women experiencing homelessness is that they can be rendered invisible by a limited understanding of homelessness. This months blog focuses on how the measurement of homelessness bolsters homeless women's invisibility. #SimonBlogs #internationalwomensday #iwd2024 #endhomelessness

"Imagine you have over $300 million to invest in critical infrastructure that transforms people’s lives. Imagine your data tells you 50% of the people have very different needs from that infrastructure than the other half, but you ignore that detail. "...The theme for International Women’s Day is to “inspire inclusion” and this failure to include 50,000 women at all stages of their lives in an experience so fundamental to the human condition as having a place to call home is something we need to open our eyes to, as it ultimately impacts all of us. ...as we engage in our events and conversations this International Women’s Day, let’s use the opportunity to commit to truly seeing those women who have become so invisible to us. Let’s commit to taking action on women’s homelessness. 50,000 women, and their kids, are relying on it." "The journey to generational wealth for Black and Latina women is ladened with obstacles, but programs like Family Self-Sufficiency can provide a roadmap for overcoming these challenges, one family at a time. By addressing systemic disparities and leveraging economic resources to help families increase their earning potential and build savings, we can break down those barriers for women to secure a brighter future for themselves and their families." -- Markita Morris-Louis, Esq., CEO of Compass Working Capital, a national nonprofit working to end asset poverty for families with low incomes and narrow the racial and gender wealth gap.
