Watch the full video here: bit.ly/4ap7O5y ————————————- In my adolescence I lived through long stretches of family members being unemployed. It hit home for me that very little separated me from the teenagers experiencing homelessness who I served free meals to every week. We had no difference in our innate ability or long term potential, the main difference was access to a safety net of support. Poverty is not a matter of charity, but a matter of justice. There are many different root causes of poverty and solutions cannot be one size fits all. But there are evidence-based tools that we know work: - Programs that build interpersonal skills and networks, creating confidence and hope that a brighter future is possible - Robust social assistance systems and cash transfers that put tools for breaking poverty traps directly in people's hands - Systems-wide investments in human capital training and apprenticeships that provide a supportive on-ramp into the workforce —————————- I'm inspired by those that recognize business as usual isn't working, and are committing to prioritize SDG funding and implementation to ending poverty. I want to see global policymakers, national governments, and people everywhere reject a status quo where where 700m+ people live without access to their full rights to wellbeing, dignity, and security It's a choice we can make, and it's possible in our lifetimes. Over the last year my colleague Neil Hill and I have had the extraordinary opportunity and deep privilege to make friends with the Education Cannot Wait (ECW) team, on behalf of Tribe Impact Capital. Spending time with the standout force of nature that is Yasmine Sherif and her incredible team, Ben Sadek and Nasser AL-Faqih, we have had the scale of the educational crisis facing displaced children around the world unpacked and explained. Through this we've been able to conduct deep dialogue with them, and others, on the role of finance and investing in addressing these challenges. ECW is the equivalent of a United Nations rapid reaction taskforce - an incredibly unique and entrepreneurial agency within an agency. Championed and set up by Gordon Brown in 2016 it has been fighting for and delivering on the educational rights of children placed in harms way. The need for them, and their sister agencies, UNICEF especially, has never been greater. Too many children are in the firing line, whether through conflict or climate related displacement. It is, therefore, incumbent on us all to do whatever we can to provide them with safety and stability now and a future they can thrive and lead in. I had the enormous pleasure of talking with Kent Page about why ECW and why Tribe in this short interview. It covers everything from the role of #women in finance, to why B Corps B Lab B Lab UK B Lab Ireland B Lab Europe Sistema B , and why we must treat knowledge as silver but wisdom as gold. Why is learning & innovation vital for the voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise (VCFSE) sector? It’s simple, if we had all the solutions to address the social challenges we face we’d have packed up already. Job done. We need to broaden our insights. What is evidence based today was once innovation & of course the evidence base remains incomplete. Doing things as we’ve always done ‘traditionally’ won’t necessarily cut it in a world that’s rapidly changing & growing in complexity. We need to embrace system thinking & innovation. The VCFSE sector is a broad church with diverse views and opinions. This is a strength. We need a democratic forum (home) for all of this rich thinking. By creating this we will deepen our collective understanding of social challenges & what works. We may for example find we become more critical of traditional philanthropic approaches which are not intrinsically ‘good’ or benign. Implemented effectively, philanthropy can be a way of assisting change, at worst, it can perpetuate power imbalances & deepen longstanding inequalities. A forum for healthy critical debates with diverse sector players facilitates collective learning / insights. An effective VCFSE sector delivers ‘what works’ while also innovating & learning so it stays humble & is enriched by new ways of seeing the world & the challenges our communities want us to address together. We essentially transform into a learning system. One committed to full sector participation & inclusivity where kindness & goodwill are outcomes of sector players & citizens feeling heard, understood & respected. Innovating & delivering tried and tested solutions (properly resourced) are both VCFSE sector strengths and are vital for social change. #thirdsector #socialinnovation #learning #collectiveintelligence #systemsthinking #systemschange #VCSE #socialchange #voluntarysector #socialenterprise
