Supporting maternal and child health takes a village. Improving maternal health outcomes at scale is a critical and complex undertaking, and none of us can do it alone. That's why we built a shared, community-wide platform that makes it easier for health, human, and social service providers to: 1. Connect underserved pregnant patients and new parents to social care programs and resources; 2. Leverage proactive interventions such as home visitation programs, prenatal care providers, and breastfeeding support; 3. Increase access to high-quality maternal care by partnering with credible provider networks and social service agencies; 4. The power of choice reveals more about any individual's capability than societal imposed limits and "stop lines". A fitting article during a month dedicated to tackling minority health disparities. "Doulas who are integrated into the communities they serve can provide 'culturally and linguistically congruent care' that supports communication between clients and their health care team, according to a blog from Drexel University College of Medicine's Women's Health Education Program." We see this impact at Novant Health when patients include doulas in their birthing experiences. 💡 New research by D-tree and Harvard about successful ways to reach new mothers to ensure they get the care they need. Equitable healthcare delivery is crucial in improving the health and well-being of mothers and babies. The study looked at nearly 40,000 new mothers enrolled in what today is Jamii ni Afya highlighted that no matter the woman’s socioeconomic background, the mothers received equal care from community health workers. This is a significant achievement in health equity, ensuring that lower-income or less-educated mothers receive the same level of care as their counterparts and confirms that digitally-supported community health worker programs like Jamii ni Afya can provide quality postpartum care to women across different socioeconomic statuses. As the United States contends with stark racial disparities in maternal health, experts are pushing states to mandate training for medical professionals to combat “implicit bias,” the prejudiced attitudes a person might hold without being aware of it. Black women across the U.S. are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. In Missouri alone, Black women are four times more likely to die of a pregnancy-related cause than white women.   This disparity in health outcomes is unacceptable. Our teams at BJC HealthCare recognize this and are working diligently to turn the tides. One of our Community Health Improvement initiatives is working to integrate doula support for Black mothers.
