Justice reinvestment diversionary programs like this have been consistently proven in all the research studies, both local and international, to be far superior in decreasing recidivism rates than traditional incarceration/punishment routes and, as if that alone wasn't enough of a great reason, costs the State orders of magnitude less to implement compared to incarceration with the benefits flowing back into the local economy and community versus into the corporate coffers of the huge multinational "big prison" contractors like Serco/G4S et al. And then, of course, there's the compounding benefit of connecting indigenous youth back to country and cultural wisdom. It's win/win all-round. We need to be diverting funding to building communities, not prisons. Great work on this awesome initiative, keep grinding!

In response to the situation with youth detention in WA at present, I’d like to offer an alternative pathway to 10 young fellas who are at risk of being sent to detention. We’ve created a diversionary program for this particular group of our youth to undertake a Cert II in Horticulture whilst in a full time job at our Native Spirit Nursery. With special thanks to our client, ALUA, for allowing us to implement this program into our contract on a Metronet project. I know its not going to be easy but as Noongar people who understand the dire situation, who happen to have an opportunity that can facilitate some of these kids, we have to try something. We’re now taking referrals for these 10 positions. Please contact me at joanne@nativespiritnursery.com.au if you’d like to know more about this program or have referrals for the program.

A model worth emulating to tackle homelessness. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority/the Government of Tamil Nadu can incorporate it the 3rd master plan and State Urban Housing Policy. Finland has taken a unique approach to address homelessness, and it’s been very successful. Instead of placing conditions on those who need help, Finland gives homeless individuals a small apartment and access to mental health support right away. This program, known as “Housing First,” focuses on providing a stable living environment before expecting people to turn their lives around. This approach has paid off. Around 80% of the people who participate in this program are able to reintegrate into society. Many of them find jobs, secure long-term housing, and maintain sobriety. Finland’s strategy has not only helped people regain stability but also shown that addressing basic needs first can be a powerful way to help people rebuild their lives with dignity and hope. #cmoftamilnadu Anna University Chennai

The HomeNow campaign is coming to life at such an incredible time with all that is housing and homelessness in Queensland. From encouraging talent into frontline work supporting people experiencing homelessness, to administrative and policy development roles in social and affordable housing, and so much more we need good people who are committed to doing good work. Is that you? 👋🏼 During this NAIDOC Week, I am celebrating Queensland’s #OurPlace Roadmap, and Housing and Homelessness Action Plan with a shared vision that every First Nations person in Queensland has a safe and secure place to call home that meets personal, location and cultural needs. For First Nations peoples, there was no concept of 'homelessness' before colonisation. Everyone had a place to call home. Home was with kin, on Country, practising culture. But currently, First Nations peoples in Queensland are experiencing a housing gap. The underlying causes are complex and may include racism and historical exclusion from education and employment, lack of understanding of family and kinship structures and mainstream housing and service industry responses that lack cultural safety. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Queensland are: 💡Six times more likely to experience homelessness than other Queenslanders. 💡More than 10 times more likely to live in social housing than other Queenslanders. 💡Twice as likely to live in severely crowded homes than other Queenslanders. 💡Only half as likely to own their own homes as other Queenslanders. 💡Five times more likely to experience financial stress than other Australians. OurPlace First Nations Housing & Homelessness Roadmap 2031: https://lnkd.in/gha8gDrU Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Housing Queensland: https://lnkd.in/gqJBKXuh Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works
Murray opens up about his journey from experiencing homelessness to working in the housing and homelessness sector. His story is a testament to resilience, and turning life experience into a career focused on positive change for the wider community. MYTH: People experiencing homelessness should "just get a job." REALITY: Securing employment is a complex challenge for those without stable housing. Barriers include lack of access to basic necessities like clean clothes, hygiene facilities, transportation, and a permanent address. Additionally, factors such as learning disabilities or limited education can further complicate job searches. Even when employed, low wages often fail to cover basic living expenses. #HousingAndEmployment #BreakingBarriers #StableHousingMatters #JobsForAll #EndHousingInsecurity #HousingForAll #CompassionInAction #CommunitySupport #HomesNotStreets #TogetherWeCan #SafeShelter #BuildCommunities #EndPovertyNow #HomesForEveryone #CommunityCare #TogetherForChange #CompassionateCommunity #ShelterForAll #EndingInsecurity #HopeAndHomes #FightForHousing #CommunityOverCrisis Photo by Tima Miroshnichenko

Neglect, homelessness, substance abuse. These are just some of the challenging issues youth support service providers deal with every day supporting Australia's most vulnerable young people. It's a sector which is necessarily heavily regulated, but meeting administrative requirements is time and resource intensive. But what if there was a talent solutions agency which not only specialised in providing the best contract and casual workers to support young people, but could also alleviate the pressure for funded providers to maintain record currency? PeopleIN's agency Edmen Community Staffing Solutions is unique in its industry with an inhouse team which manages the compliance process for its own workforce. And this recently proved its worth as a key point of difference with Edmen recently securing a place on a large and important recruitment panel. You can learn more in our latest case study. https://lnkd.in/gUQgqBXe #CommunityStaffing #YouthWork #Compliance #Growth #DisabilitySupport #MarketLeading #ProudlyAustralian
