SFU Physics Colloquium Casting A Wide Net for Dark Matter Tim Tait, University of California, Irvine Friday, March 15, 2024 at 2:30pm in AQ 3149 and online I will discuss the need to extend the Standard Model of particle physics in order to describe the dark matter, a mysterious substance whose existence can be inferred from cosmological measurements, but whose fundamental nature remains unknown. I’ll discuss how a broad strategy of searching for dark matter using techniques from particle physics and astronomy maximize our chances of successfully discovering its identity, and what this could mean for future research in particle physics. https://lnkd.in/gRa_m2QK Register to join on Zoom (https://lnkd.in/gAPKCbXG) #SFU_Physics #DarkMatter

Registration open: 2024 High Energy Density Summer School -Foundations of High Energy Density Physics: June 3 – 7, 2024: VIRTUAL, June 17 – 21, 2024: IN PERSON Presented at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI High-energy-density #physics is an actively growing field that exploits the ability of various modern devices to create pressures of millions of atmospheres in dynamic, high-temperature, and even relativistic systems. This field of physics is essential to inertial fusion research, to using such tools to address issues in astrophysics, and to other fundamental studies and applications. In an effort to promote the spread of broad, fundamental knowledge in this new field, and to help train the new entrants to it, the 2024 session of this Sumer school will begin with a high-level, virtual component (June 3-7) and continue with a more in-depth component in Ann Arbor (June 17-21). The course is aimed primarily at graduate students, young scientists, and experienced scientists who are just entering high-energy-density physics. Both the book and the lectures assume familiarity with partial differential vector calculus. Participants will also be introduced to the new ZEUS facility at the University of Michigan. https://lnkd.in/gExhY8GY

Менин, В. (2023) From Black Holes to Information Erasure: Uniting Bekenstein’s Bound and Landauer’s Principle. Journal of Applied Mathematics and Physics, 11(8), 2185-2194. https://lnkd.in/dxc-AuF3. This research aims to integrate Bekenstein’s bound and Landauer’s principle, providing a unified framework to understand the limits of information and energy in physical systems. By combining these principles, we explore the implications for black hole thermodynamics, astrophysics, astronomy, information theory, and the search for new laws of nature. The result includes an estimation of the number of bits stored in a black hole (less than 1.4 × 1030 bits/m3 ), enhancing our understanding of information storage in extreme gravitational environments. This integration offers valuable insights into the fundamental nature of information and energy, impacting scientific advancements in multiple disciplines.
