AJN's editor-in-chief Carl Kirton DNP, RN, MBA, ANP, FAAN devotes his July editorial to exploring the question of whether a STEM designation for the #nursing profession could be a "game changer" that could help alleviate the nursing workforce problem. This one-pager is currently free to read. Thoughts? https://lnkd.in/efXBwy52
Assessing patients and adjusting care within a feedback system is absolutely a STEM career. Knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics and psychology in order to do our jobs. Tip of the iceberg.
Great article and a much needed initiative...thank you

3moI read this article with interest and so many different thoughts. To align Nursibg as part of the STEM initiative would be a progressive step, However it must be done with a coordinated effort to introduce nursing as a profession to young students and improve the curriculum of the sciences and math from Junior HS in this country. It was interesting to note the relevance on making it easier for foreign nurses and students to train but we must also improve the pool of qualified students here. As we look for ways to strengthen our profession we must also improve the retention, education and promotion of nurses choosing to stay in nursing and work at the bedside , research must address this also. Change is desperately needed ,as I started my nursing career in 1977 There has always been a nursing shortage, what are we missing? I applaud the mission of the STEM proposal it will be an all hands on effort
