Incredible news from onsemi as they announce a plan to invest $2bn in a site for end-to-end of product of SiC products in Czechia. onsemi has been one of the big winners of the SiC boom, quadrupling its SiC revenue in 2023, securing second position in the market share rankings, and closing in quickly on ST. There has been significant investment in SiC facilities, raising concerns about potential over-capacity in the near future. However, we forecast that by 2028, xEV applications will account for nearly a third of the total power discrete and module market, indicating substantial demand. Additionally, the auto OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers we consult emphasize that ramping up new 8-inch facilities to produce automotive-qualified parts is challenging, suggesting that the over-capacity issue may not be as severe as anticipated.

Interim Executive Asia & Europe / Turnaround of Sales, Organizations & People / bioLogic® Ambassador
Only 8 % of hightech battery cell line equipment are supplied from European manufacturers*. The fresh project annulation of Gigafactories by Svolt, ACC and BYD (extension) in German hurt Chinese equipment suppliers most. Does this consolidation give the European suppliers time to catch up? Or will they be dead or lose interest before it gets interesting? European providers of production technology would need a 50% annual growth* in order to capture a more influential 25% market share by 2030 of the 300bio market size?. What risks, chances and challenges do European suppliers face? Lets look at the risks first, they are plenty. * according to a study by Porsche Consulting in collaboration with VDMA
