Fabien Bonneau will be defending his PhD thesis with a talk entitled "Shape and composition of native mRNA-containing particles isolated from yeast cells" on Friday 12 January 2024 at Aarhus University. During his studies, Fabien Bonneau focused on how messenger RNAs (mRNAs) are packaged together with proteins. mRNAs carry the building plans of all proteins across different compartments within our cells. They are fragile molecules, themselves covered with proteins. Using yeast as a model system, Fabien Bonneau established procedures to isolate native mRNAs together with their protein coat. This material allowed him to identify a network of interactions likely responsible for giving these assemblies a compact shape. The new research findings contribute to the understanding of how mRNAs are packaged into compact particles before travelling within our cells. Excited to share that two Technion PIs were awarded an ERC Advanced Grant! Congratulations to Prof. Jackie Schiller and Prof. Michael Glickman, Technion, for winning the prestigious ERC Advanced Grant, awarded to outstanding PIs by the European Commission. It was a special pleasure working with them on these inspiring and exciting grants, since both were close to heart - they were both in the field of neuroscience. I enjoyed working with both PIs starting from the discussion of the idea, providing feedback on the drafts, and then helping them prepare for the interview. Prof. Schiller's grant, "Dendrite assemblies as the core cortical computation module for continual motor learning," proposes a new hypothesis for how new memories avoid running over older ones, focusing on motor learning. This research has implications for better mechanistic understanding of memory in health and disease, such as Parkinson's disease, as well as AI. Prof. Glickman's grant, "The origin and impact of impaired ubiquitin signaling in the degeneration of neurons," proposes a new hypothesis where ubiquitin malfunction plays a causal role in Alzheimer's disease. This research has implications for better mechanistic understanding of Alzheimer's disease and its causes, and identifying novel therapeutic targets. Both projects are groundbreaking and ambitious – well deserved! Michael Glickman Jackie Schiller
Congratulations to Prof. Jackie Schiller and Prof. Michael Glickman - Awarded ERC Advanced Grants Prestigious grants from the European Commission’s Horizon Europe program were awarded to two experienced Technion researchers with outstanding achievements in research over the past decade. Each of them will receive €2.5 million. https://lnkd.in/gFkAzcJi Jackie Schiller Faculty of Medicine Technion Michael Glickman Faculty of Biology at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology #Horizoneuropeprogram #Parkinsons #Alzheimers

Two Scripps Research postdoctoral scientists, Divya Bezwada, PhD, and Donté Alexander Stevens, PhD, have been awarded prestigious fellowships by the Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research. This honor includes $223,800 in research funding over a three-year period. Bezwada, working in Prof. Ben Cravatt's lab, is exploring allostery, a fundamental biochemical process in protein function. Her research aims to develop new chemical tools to understand allosteric sites and their potential therapeutic applications. In the lab of Asst. Prof. Keren Lasker, Stevens is investigating a novel mode for treating tauopathies, such as Alzheimer’s, by engineering biomolecular condensates to remove tau aggregates in the brain. His work will lay the foundation for next-generation tauopathy therapies. More: https://ow.ly/vFIt50SNs3M
