A 23% increase in attendance in the first year of the campaign followed by record-breaking attendance each consecutive year that followed? Talk about GREAT! The Great New York State Fair is one of New York’s largest annual events and has marked the end of the summer for 181 years. It’s the oldest fair in the US—and now one of the largest, with over 1 million visitors every year. In 2016, the fair completed $50 million in redevelopments, including a magnificent new entrance, greater open space and a larger midway. Following this significant investment, Gov. Andrew Cuomo challenged the fair to increase total attendance to 1 million visitors, and turned to Dixon Schwabl + Company to make that goal a reality. It was important to understand more about the people who attend the fair. And just as important, why they do. We distilled what we learned about our audiences and discovered a key insight: Every individual experiences the fair differently and finds their own great time. That guided the creative theme, and the dynamic “Find Your Great” campaign was built to tap into attendees’ individual experiences at the fair. Leaning further into the adventure the fair offers, we played up the thrill of discovery throughout the campaign. Starting in 2016, marketing efforts included digital, social, TV, radio, outdoor and print media, a new podcast series and earned PR initiatives. As the campaign evolved, we found new ways to reach our audience through robust content. Emphasis was placed on representing and increasing diversity and was central to the creative DNA. For the next four years, attendance grew, more visitors came from outer-ring markets and diversity increased. DS+CO and the Great New York State Fair increased attendance 23% just in the first year of the campaign, exceeding the million-visitor goal. Mount is only attending two STR conferences this year. I know many of us in the industry feel the pressure to show up, believing that appearances and big booths equal success. It’s a playbook I followed last year—investing in booths, tickets, and accommodations just to maintain visibility. But after attending, I realized the ROI was shrinking. The audience was mainly vendors, and the same speakers were repeating the same tired narratives. This year, we shifted our focus to organic social media and retreats, and the results speak for themselves: over 7.2M views, 190k new followers, and continued validation of our product-market fit—without spending a dime to achieve it. Talk about ROI. As we move into Fall, Mount will continue to double down on our Content Army, Stewards, and organic, scalable social media. I’ll still be at a few conferences to share how we’ve achieved these results and, of course, to throw a few fun events here and there. #shorttermrental #marketing
