Where AI is making a difference in healthcare now 👨⚕️ 📄 The Healthcare IT News article provides a compelling look at the current impact of artificial intelligence in healthcare, highlighting both the clinical and financial use cases where AI is already showing its worth. Dr. Carrie Nelson, chief medical officer at Amwell, shares insights into the exciting AI tools emerging for clinicians and the potential risks associated with the rapid adoption of AI systems. AI's ability to alleviate the administrative burden on clinicians is particularly noteworthy. For instance, AI tools are reported to have the potential to reduce 35% of the documentation burden on nurses, which is a significant portion of their workload. This reduction could lead to decreased burnout and allow clinicians to focus more on patient care. The article also discusses how AI innovations empower health systems to deliver hybrid care at scale, enhancing access and improving outcomes. For example, Spectrum Health's automated, chat-based check-ins with patients after discharge have led to a 5% reduction in emergency department visits and a savings of $1 million, along with a 90% patient satisfaction rate. Similarly, St. Luke’s University Health Network's use of automated digital behavioral health tools has helped 71% of participants achieve clinically significant improvement. These examples underscore the transformative power of AI in healthcare. However, the article cautions against moving too quickly with AI adoption, as there are risks involved. It's crucial to take a value-based approach to AI integration, ensuring that the technology is used responsibly and effectively to enhance patient care without compromising safety or quality. In summary, the article from Healthcare IT News serves as a reminder of the significant strides AI is making in healthcare, offering a glimpse into a future where technology and human expertise combine to create a more efficient, effective, and patient-centered healthcare system. As artificial intelligence is providing greater utility in healthcare, is it time to align these causes rather than view them as opposing forces? Validated AI may significantly enhance healthcare by improving diagnostics, fostering widespread adoption of personalized medicine, as well as reshaping various other facets of patient care. The American Medical Association terms this technology 'augmented intelligence' rather than ‘artificial intelligence,’ emphasizing its role in supporting, instead of replacing, human decision-making. At PreciseDx, we recognize the vital role of AI-based tools in working alongside the cancer care team. Termed ‘Quantitative AI™’, we offer an assistive technology that informs care team decision-making. By harnessing this validated and published AI platform, we aim to empower healthcare providers with advanced diagnostic capabilities and personalized treatment insights to improve patient outcomes and drive innovation in healthcare. A recent report by the AMA explores the transformative potential of augmented intelligence in healthcare and provides practical guidance for physicians using AI-based tools. A recent survey by Wolters Kluwer Health, conducted between February 8 and 13, reveals a significant shift among physicians toward embracing generative artificial intelligence (genAI) in healthcare. The online survey, involving 100 practicing physicians from large U.S. hospitals who use clinical decision support tools, indicates that 81% of respondents believe genAI can enhance patient care team interactions, with 54% stating it could save them significant time in clinical decision-making. Despite this enthusiasm, there is a notable discrepancy between physicians and patients regarding the adoption of AI, as revealed in Wolters Kluwer's previous consumer survey. Additionally, while doctors hold GenAI in high regard, particularly from trusted vendors, there still exists a lack of clear guidelines within organizations on AI use, pointing to an emerging need for policy and transparency in its deployment in clinical settings. Moreover, the concern about GenAI’s role in healthcare decision-making is considerably more pronounced among consumers than among healthcare providers. https://lnkd.in/enDp77bi

Great example of the power of Human in the loop design. TLDR: Human + AI achieves same results as human alone, clinically. ✅ But human + AI sees 2x patients without increased workload/burnout. 🚀 A safe, scalable solution for MSK patients.
The first ever clinical study about the impact of AI in care delivery was just published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine. It found that AI Care makes it possible to deliver high quality care to a broader population, and, in fact, has a positive impact on patient engagement and satisfaction. By using AI to complete clerical tasks, support patient monitoring, and aid decision-making on patient progression, clinicians can dedicate more time to more patients so that everyone can benefit equally from the highest-quality care.

Entrepreneur, investor, fractional CTO: AI and Medical IoT, Digital Health, Remote Patient Monitoring
There are significant unresolved issues in patient data transparency and Consent Management. The latest workshop at HIMSS-24 managed by Daniel Stein and Stewards of Change Institute in cooperation with InterSystems’s Kirk Groethe shows how much we need to do in this area. This is why I'm thrilled to share a remarkable milestone for patient transparency with the latest strides from OpenNotes, a pioneering advocate for open access to medical information. For over a decade, OpenNotes has championed transparency in healthcare, advocating for patients' rights to access their medical records and doctor's notes. Now, their efforts have culminated in a significant win with the 21st Century Cures Act and ONC's 2020 Final Rule, which prioritize sharing electronic health information by default. This victory propels OpenNotes into new frontiers, where they're pioneering Patient-Centered AI through their innovative OpenNotes Lab. Cait DesRoches, DrPH MSc Executive Director at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), highlights this pivotal moment: "Through the Lab, we'll leverage our experience to collaborate with developers of clinical documentation technologies, exploring new processes that benefit both patients and clinicians." OpenNotes Lab will delve into the intersection of generative AI and patient care, spearheaded by Liz Salmi and Dr. Chethan Sarabu, MD, FAMIA, FAAP. "Addressing algorithmic bias is paramount," notes John Halamka, M.D., M.S., President of the Mayo Clinic Platform. The Lab aims to unlock unique collaborations, ensuring that AI innovations drive equitable, patient-centric healthcare outcomes. This initiative also marks a shift in collaboration for OpenNotes, embracing partnerships with industry innovators. Sarabu highlights the potential of generative AI, envisioning a future where technology enhances rather than hinders healthcare experiences. The Lab will explore cutting-edge solutions like ambient clinical voice, striving to streamline care delivery. Source https://lnkd.in/e-XB8YTq

3moGreat analysis Jesse Ehrenfeld MD MPH. I’d say AI development efforts must involve nurses and physicians from the onset. Before you can deliver care, you need to coordinate it. And nurses are a key part of the team coordinating and delivering care, working closely with physicians. In the last decade, EHR added burden because it was done to clinicians. To succeed, AI must avoid repeating that mistake.
