Every day, but especially today, we are grateful for DSPs like Dungarvin's Doug Simmonsen, who are key to upholding the promises of #inclusion made possible by the Supreme Court's historic #Olmstead decision.

Twenty-five years ago, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg announced an important decision in the landmark case Olmstead v. L.C. The 6-3 decision meant an end to forced “unjustified institutionalization” of people with disabilities, and the right to live in community with others in the most integrated settings possible. As a result, providers like Dungarvin have molded their support services to enable the individuals we serve to live fully as members of their community.   Today, as we take stock of what this important decision has meant to so many individuals and families, we must also acknowledge that these liberties are, sadly, still not secure. “When I was 10 years old, I often babysat a little boy with Down syndrome,” said Dungarvin’s 2024 ANCOR DSP of the Year, Doug Simmonsen. “Even at that age, I was aware of how his family struggled to find resources for their son and make ends meet. Throughout my tenure as a DSP, I’ve only seen things get worse. The people I support see skyrocketing costs for everyday essentials. Whereas I used to be able to help with these costs on occasion, these days I’m finding my own finances stretched even thinner. Recently, I agreed to begin supporting a second person, thinking it would help bring in more income. Instead, additional bills mean I’m only falling farther behind.   Nevertheless, I will continue my commitment to DSP work because of the impact I know I’m having in the lives of those I support. The Olmstead precedent makes it a matter of law that we provide individuals with disabilities the support they need to thrive in communities. Now is the time to act with decency and care to give them the same rights some of us take for granted.”   Well said, Doug, we couldn’t agree with you more and are grateful for your support and leadership as we fulfill our mission to: respect and respond to the choices of those in need of supports. #dungarvin #dungarvinway #dungarvincareers #celebratingmilestones #nevada #minnesota #olmstead Pictured: DSP of the Year Doug Simmonsen, and Virgil, the person he supports.
