This is one of my favorite articles I've written, as I am extremely vested in mentoring nursing students and other nurses. 💙 Mentoring is crucial to the development, adjustment, success, and critical thinking among new nurses, nursing students, nurses new to an organization, and even experienced nurses. 🩺 Being mentored by other nurses helps the nursing student and novice nurse grow in ways needed to become proficient and successful. 🤝 Seasoned nurses benefit from being mentored by more senior nurses, who offer peer support and encourage them to remain engaged and attain their professional goals. 🌟 Mentoring programs facilitate professional growth and create cohesive units that improve patient care and outcomes. 💯🎯 #nurses #nursing #nurselife #nurse #strengththruadversity #strongertogether #nursinginspiration #nursingleadership #nursingstudents #nurseleaders #hospitals #healthcare #nursesonlinkedin #encouragement #mentorshipmatters #mentoring #futureofnursing #futureofhealthcare

Change is scary😳 Regret is scarier😱 Helping Health Leaders in Midlife decide what the next phase of their career could look like💡
Nurses are amazing humans. Nurses who tread into leadership enter a world where what they knew as a nurse usually does not have the same instruction manual that our nursing education provided. Okay – nursing school didn’t teach us everything, but it built the foundation that we needed to ensure we had the education to provide good patient care, and the knowledge to know where to find the stuff we didn’t. Those of us with ‘leadership qualities’ are often approached to take on management roles. Not clinical management. That we know. Management –it’s often called middle, corporate, business, unit… With elements of human resource management, financial or budgetary management, asset management, and myriad other tasks – we are expected to inherently ‘know’ how to do these things when what we are coming in with required a completely different skill set. And to top it off – because we are often overwhelmed with this steep learning curve, our staff may see us as disconnected or no longer ‘one of them’. To be fair – this isn’t everyone. Many are able to bridge the chasm. Some – like me – have a background in business that we developed before we went into nursing. This means we already have many of the non-clinical skills needed so we can focus on what most of us truly want – to represent our staff and units so that we enable best care. Every so often an organisation actually has a program in place – with mentoring, coaching, and other methods of learning that gives the new nurse manager the best possible chance at success – though this is rare. Even with all of the support to help us achieve our goals, many of us will reach a time where we start to wonder whether this is how we want to spend the last decade or so of our working life. We have spent decades looking after everyone else – our patients, our staff, our organisations, our families – children, partners, parents and others. Healthcare in general has become so stressful that many of us are completely burnt out. Being in management often exacerbates this. Are you ready to look after yourself? Do you know what that looks like? Could it be leaning into leadership more strongly now that you have fewer external time constraints? Or perhaps stepping back into a clinical role is more appealing but you aren’t sure if that is the right move. Or considering a healthcare-related side hustle or business – or perhaps non- health-related. Maybe it’s chasing a career that you always wanted to explore but couldn’t because the demands of life didn’t allow it until now. What can being a Nurse Leader in Transition look like for you? Do you dare go there? #nurseLIT #nurseleader #nurseleaderburnout #nurseburnout #nursemanager
