Although there has been more research on health inequities in recent decades, there remains insufficient data about racial, ethnic, and other disparities in physical therapy. Upcoming special issues of PTJ aim to fill these gaps. 🔍👀 Read more from APTA Magazine: https://lnkd.in/dBcbYk3F

I will be contributing as an independent expert on socioeconomic burden to the update of the Oxford Health Policy Forum's global MS Brain Health: Time Matters policy report. The original policy report was published in 2015, and much has changed since then. The report will also be expanded to cover NMOSD and MOGAD, underserved conditions which may be misdiagnosed as MS. Similar principles apply to bring about high-quality care, including timely diagnosis and management. #healthpolicy #MSbrainhealth #NMOSD #MOGAD

Three important themes were mentioned by the government today on the back of the Lord Darzi's report on the NHS: - Focus on prevention - Community based interventions - Switch to digital This is great to hear, and hopefully the government will further support the necessary research into these areas to ensure the best and most effective interventions and practices are put into place. Cross cutting these themes is the issue of health inequalities. I haven't seen much mention of this in the reporting today, but it is mentioned in the Darzi report, and research can further inform how we can ensure new approaches reduce, rather than increase, inequalities. My own research covers many aspects of the three themes mentioned in the specific area of musculoskeletal health, an area which is certainly moving in the right direction in the context of these themes. But there is still lots to do and I look forward to hopefully seeing a greater focus on the development of community-based digital health interventions to help people keep active and reduce risk of long-term health conditions. 📣 New publication alert 📣 Our latest research reveals that socioeconomic status significantly impacts functional outcomes after a stroke. Despite advances in healthcare, social disadvantage remains a significant risk factor for poor functional recovery. Honoured to have collaborated with esteemed experts in the field to shed light on this critical issue. Together, we can work towards reducing health disparities and improving stroke care for all. The science behind the health benefits of Biophilic design are complex, but sometimes you come across an article that helps get your head around aspects, and more importantly, helps frame what it can achieve. The following is written from a clinical perspective, and how access to nature is being prescribed by Doctors and Social Prescribers, where the research indicates that 83% of studies reviewed showed proven physical health benefits, 98% proven mental health benefits and 75% proven cognitive benefits. Interestingly, the main barriers are availability and funding, but these are two things that can be addressed through planning and enhanced through Social Value. Short version: biophilic design, access to nature and calm and sensory spaces can prevent, reduce and even treat many of our pressing public health challenges and inequality. Do not underestimate the value, and do consider any behavioural barriers when designing them in. https://lnkd.in/e5wg5S63

March is #endometriosis awareness month. Endometriosis is a chronic disease that impacts not only #physical health but #mental health. It affects 1 in 10 women in the UK. On average it takes 7.5 years for a woman to receive the diagnosis. Despite endometriosis being identified over 160 years ago, we still have huge knowledge gaps surrounding the condition. Funding for endometriosis research has been disproportionately low compared to the number of women it affects, impact on quality of life and the economy. Every woman with the condition deserves the right to accessible, #evidencebased health care. A new drug is currently being trialled on women - dichloroacetate which will be groundbreaking if found to be effective in treating endometriosis. Closing out the week... Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are an expensive and pervasive problem that continue to grow, perhaps due to the exponential surge in pickleballers. More than half of American adults are affected by an MSK condition, and it regularly ranks among the top 3 conditions driving healthcare costs. I frequently hear that MSK is not a priority this year, but it should be. Behavioral Health and Women's Health are critically important, but if you are not addressing MSK in a meaningful way, it can greatly impact these other categories. Research has demonstrated that people with chronic MSK issues experience significantly higher symptoms of anxiety, stress, depression and insomnia. It's time to focus on total health. Let's talk.

I am currently engaged in developing an intervention tool aimed at addressing healthcare disparities, my research has primarily focused on geriatric patients. However, the ultimate goal of this initiative is to create a tool that empowers individuals of all ages to understand their diagnoses comprehensively and navigate life post-diagnosis with confidence. The journey involves assessing the feasibility of such a tool for a broad demographic. My research involved exploring the TED talk on Social Determinants of Health (https://lnkd.in/d-_EjSxA) and the strategic insights from Healthy People 2030 (https://lnkd.in/dtJ6fK-B). #HealthEquity #ResearchInProgress
