This week is National Careers Week so we are sharing the story behind our founding directors choice to take up a career in scientific research. As researchers we can lose ourselves in the details of the research we conduct. It can be easy for us to forget that we are also ambassadors for science and role models for the next generation. By sharing our stories, we can provide an insight into our career choices and perhaps inspire others to consider a career in research too. Nikki’s Story At around the age of 14 I developed temporal lobe epilepsy. I don’t know the reason why and I doubt I ever will but with medication my seizures were controlled. Then at around the age of 17 the epilepsy suddenly got worse and was no longer controlled by medication. It meant that I dropped out of college for a year and instead spent my time in hospital. I was barely conscious for most of it, but I survived thanks to a team of medical professionals who worked it out. Something in my brain had changed. Something that meant that I no longer required the anti-epileptic medication and that it was now causing rather than managing the seizures. I have now been drug-free and seizure-free for over 25 years. This life event is the reason that I became a scientist – to conduct research that enhances our understanding of the human brain and body for the benefit of Society. Finishing my first week at Biocytogen has been an eye-opening experience! Here are my main takeaways: - Transitioning from academia to business has been a challenging yet rewarding journey. Working alongside accomplished scientists who have made similar transitions reminds me that change is part of growth. - The financial struggles faced by academics are real. As a first-generation scientist, I understand the burden of debt and limited financial stability. These struggles led me to difficult decisions at the start of my earning years. I had made peace with postponing major life milestones and taking a postdoc salary for the love of science! No one should have to decide between achieving financial goals and their love for their career. - The most important validation comes from within. Overcoming anxiety about others' opinions was a significant hurdle. Now, being genuinely happy in my new role reinforces that personal fulfillment is paramount. Wishing everyone a Happy Friday! ✨ #CareerTransition #NewBeginnings #PersonalGrowth

My first hand experience transitioning from academia to industry was scary. During my PhD I was really unsure what I wanted to do, and I didn't have many (female) role models in any professions. Then, when I started applying to roles in "industry" I had so many rejections and was really unsure what to do. Reaching out and developing a network on LinkedIn really helped (however, a global pandemic did not!). I now help run these careers webinars so that anyone can attend and get a better understanding of the huge variety of roles available to young scientists, in and out of academia. I think hearing from others who have these roles is so important to humanize jobs and demystify certain industries. We have an amazing panel for both the industry and academic careers panel, and I can't wait to hear what they have to say!
