Sales tip of the day: What is a big deal to you may be a minor detail to the customer. Seeing what we do through the customer’s eyes will change how we approach the selling situation. We are looking at new business, a new account, increased sales, the President’s Club, a year-end bonus. The customer is looking at overall operations and one little thing one way or the other isn’t going to change his or her world very much. We have to sell the idea that the details count, not just for us (which they do), but for the customer. We have to tell the stories of how others have benefited. Dennis Rousseau of Chemworks was calling on a power plant job site. He sells water filters for cooling towers. Amid all the three-hundred-ton generators and turbines being mounted in the main building, his little filter tanks are a minor and unspecified piece of equipment. As he walked the ground with the plant manager, he complimented him on keeping all the trees in the area and being a most friendly green project.
