“We don’t do anything that’s meaningful.” (A teen you know may have said this.) Yes, high school is broken. But it can be fixed. It starts by shifting away from offering teachers and students Band-Aids that doubles down on a failing formula. On the third day of Wicked Problems, we’re spotlighting Student Belonging. As we discovered from our research with the University of Pittsburgh, an important component of belonging is the ability to access and easily navigate student support resources such as career services, tutoring, financial services, advising, and mental health support. But most students either aren’t leveraging existing support services at all, or find them lacking. One solution that has emerged from our EdTech Survey that may benefit both advisors and students is additional digital access — for first-generation students in particular, this mode of utilizing student support services is preferred.
