American Red Cross’ Post

Meet Pastor Ken Austin! He’s the executive director of a nonprofit organization addressing food and housing insecurities for residents in Montgomery, Alabama. “I really, really believe in helping people,” Ken said. “And this is a place where people need help.” The Mercy House is a critical hub in Alabama that supports those struggling with stable housing. The day shelter provides the community with access to food, clothing, shower facilities, and laundry machines. Ken and his dedicated team of volunteers serve about 500 meals a day from the Mercy House. “The people who walk up to the door are our neighbors, and we treat them as such,” Ken said. “We let them know that we care, we're concerned about them, and we're here to help. And they walk away with help.” As part of our climate crisis initiative, we teamed up with Ken and other community partners in high-disaster risk areas to support projects that increase access to nutritious food, medical care, and affordable housing. This partnership helps communities that have experienced destructive disasters build resilience and community resources before the next one strikes. “I served in the military, so the Red Cross always had a huge place in my heart,” Ken said. “To be in a place where we're serving people in need and have the Red Cross walking alongside us is major for us. We appreciate this partnership.”

As a trained volunteer caseworker for American Red Cross, we learned things like community and corporate partners. These partners not only help rebuild communities but they also help set a good foundation for those who need there resources the most.
