A message from our Executive Director: We are grateful in this moment for all the coalitions and associations we belong to like the National Council of Nonprofits, Nonprofit Association of Oregon, National Low Income Housing Coalition, National Homelessness Law Center, and National Alliance to End Homelessness and many others who are providing the nonprofit community with critical updates, information, training and resources to help us protect those whose safety is most at risk. These associations are also helping organizations like Our Just Future ensure we will continue to exist and to defend and protect our team and mission amidst the dizzying array of new compliance orders and mandates. We are deeply appreciative to have the help and support of those able to provide a basic map of the new minefields that help us keep up in a rapidly-changing landscape. At The Honeycomb Project, we remain dedicated to supporting our community, especially in times of uncertainty. Recent federal policy changes have temporarily disrupted funding for many organizations, including Honeycomb partners, but we are committed to continue delivering essential programs and services for our Chicago community. We are already witnessing the devastating impact of these budget cuts—food pantries are being disrupted or completely cut off from supplies, and our nonprofit partners are struggling to meet the growing needs of their clients as critical services vanish. I woke up to this news this morning, along with many of the nonprofit partners I've been lucky enough to work with throughout my career. Keeping a nonprofit funded is one of the many challenges of nonprofit management. It's hard enough as it is, and this dumps a whole new weight onto that heavy load. Although the nonprofit sector is flawed in many ways, it also fills needs that for-profits and government agencies can't or won't, doing work that changes and saves lives, and that brings beauty and joy to our communities. I know a lot of nonprofit leaders are going to be looking today for the immediate fix to address short-term cash flow and long-term budgeting questions. I wish I knew of a quick and easy solution, but there's no simple strategy to make it rain and replace the significant funding loss that this move represents. The best advice, broad as it might be, that I can offer is: 1) Reach out to your closest supporters and let them know how this affects you. Not just the people and institutions who give the largest monetary donations, but also the people who always show up at your events, who volunteer with you, who have served on your board, and who are alumni. 2) Some of those people will want to help. Give them opportunities to donate money, time, and emotional support. 3) Circle up with your partners outside of your organization. Start talking about how organizations can creatively collaborate and provide services together when there's not enough funding to do it in silos. 4) If you are in a position of leadership, check in with your people. If you have development staff who are involved with federal grantwriting, they are already aware and stressed. If you have team members whose positions are funded through federal grants, they're worried, too. Even if you don't have answers yet, this is a really important day to let your team know that you're in this with them. And, of course, it's always a good day to contact your elected officials and remind them why fully-funded nonprofits are essential to their districts and constituents.

As wildfire season gets underway across the West, the lessons of the devastating blazes of 2020 continue to reverberate in rural Oregon. The Community Rebuilding Fund was a collaboration of OCF, The Ford Family Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust and the American Red Crosss. It raised $10.8 million for community-led efforts to make fire-devastated areas stronger over the long term and more resilient to disasters. OCF donors stepped up to give generously. Those dollars have now been fully distributed. Yet, the fund’s impact lives on: In local nonprofits more equipped to help their neighbors. “The term ‘unprecedented’ couldn’t be more accurate,” said Jenni Campbell, executive director of the Los Angeles Region Community Recovery Organization (LARCRO), or LARCRO. “The number of agencies and organizations that have come forward to participate in disaster case management is also unprecedented.” While FEMA provides funding for disaster case management for survivors of the L.A. wildfires, most groups will rely on philanthropic and local support to hire and train case managers.
