Meet Shenika Young, a risk reduction coordinator with our Community Adaptation Program in Yazoo County, Mississippi. She helps local partners that provide food, health and housing services for vulnerable communities become more resilient. For over 13 years, Shenika has served the Mississippi community she grew up in, guided by her talent and care for people. “What has motivated me to do this kind of work is being able to be a part of promoting social justice for everyone,” she said. “To help make sure equality is out there for everyone — regardless of their background, who they are, or what their income situation may be.” Before joining the Red Cross, Shenika, a licensed social worker, helped low-income families and individuals in Yazoo acquire assistance through grants and programs. This passion has driven her to earn a Doctorate in Social Work. Now, she works to strengthen local community partners in disaster-prone areas to help increase access to available resources for people in need. Organizations part of our Community Adaptation Program include food pantries, local churches, health clinics, and more. “I’ve witnessed several natural disasters and been part of coalitions addressing the needs of affected people,” Shenika said. “Many rural areas were impacted, leaving people without homes. Seeing these needs inspired me to join this program because it addresses those issues.” The climate crisis continues to take a toll on vulnerable populations across the country. We’re grateful for Red Crossers like Shenika, who are working diligently in communities to help foster disaster resilience.
