People in western Alaska struggled to access clean drinking water after Typhoon Merbok struck the area in September 2022. The storm left devastating damage to homes, roads and seawalls, including Alaska’s water system. Bottled water was donated, but the shipping costs were high and plastic waste quickly became a problem for the Bering Strait region. The community needed a sustainable solution, and our Long-Term Recovery team stepped in to help. Our teams partnered with Kawerak, Inc., a nonprofit tribal consortium, to install water filters in some of the hardest-hit villages across Alaska. More than 3,200 people have received water filtration systems as of July 2024. The impacts of extreme weather are a daily challenge for many vulnerable communities. We’re working to combat that by providing sustainable, lifesaving solutions.

Covering 70% of our planet, the #ocean is essential for all life on #Earth. It’s a vital home to countless species, from vibrant coral reefs to majestic whales. But it's under relentless attack from destructive fishing, habitat loss, and pollution. We’re on the front lines of this battle. Through direct action campaigns, we fight tirelessly to protect marine life and preserve our oceans from illegal exploitation and environmental harm all year round. The ocean’s survival is our survival. Take a stand with us—volunteer, support, or donate. On #WorldWetlandsDay, we celebrate the vital role wetlands play in mitigating climate change 🌿💧🐸 They act as sponges on the landscape, soaking up water and storing carbon. They help filter water. They control flooding and they provide important habitat for many species. The Nature Trust of BC wants to protect the 129 hectares of Ferguson Lake Wetlands in Prince George - a unique habitat home to iconic species including moose, black bear and the American beaver. If you also value wetlands, donate this #WorldWetlandsDay to protect wetlands like Ferguson Lake - investing today so we don’t pay a price tomorrow: https://bit.ly/42nQADb

Please think of Chubb for your environmental policy needs - it makes a difference. For more than a decade, Chubb has partnered with American Forests, and has contributed $1 toward tree-planting initiatives for every environmental insurance policy issued globally. In that time, more than 390k Chubb-donated trees have benefitted communities worldwide. For 2024, Chubb has donated $40k – equal to 40k trees – to support ‘Patriot Trees' Loblolly Pine Restoration. #EarthDay. Things things matter to me and Chubb.

Asheville was home for me and my family for over 10 years. I am completely shattered by the images of destruction, of towns now obliterated, of homes and livelihoods destroyed. My friends are ok, most having suffered no serious property damage, many more were less fortunate. The devastation I'm seeing is a stark reminder of how climate change intensifies natural disasters. Big Oil often gets the spotlight in climate conversations, but it’s crucial to remember that animal agriculture also drives this crisis--contributing about 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, more than the entire transportation sector. Climate change is a frightening reality. And we can't afford to ignore the role animal agriculture plays in driving it or the fact that plant-based options offer a real, sustainable solution. We need to shift our priorities. Every step counts when it comes to protecting communities like this from future disasters. Right now, though, our #WNC community needs immediate help—please consider donating to BeLoved Asheville (linked below) to support those affected. Let’s come together for both people and the planet. #climatechange #asheville #helene

🌎 🌏 🌍 At LUSH, Earth Day isn't just a date on the calendar; it's a reminder to renew our commitment to those protecting our planets’ precious lands, air and waters. Prompted by the eye-watering number of land defenders and water protectors murdered in recent years - 1910 defenders reported killed from 2012-2022, with many more unreported. In 2023 we launched the Lush Frontline Defenders Fund, and contributed $210,750 to 14 partner organisations working at the front lines of environmental defence. Focussed on areas of the world with the highest prevalence of violence against environmental defenders, we worked with trusted partners and sector leaders in distributing small grants from $10,000 to $25,000, which organisations held as emergency funds ready to be deployed quickly as the need arises. Frontline organisations know best how to respond, and this kind of funding should be done in trust, as it does not fit the usual philanthropy timelines and reporting requirements. Join us in honouring the tireless efforts of environmental defenders, read their struggles and stories of resilience. #EarthDay #LushCommunity #FrontlineDefenders #CharityPot

Indigenous Land and Environmental Defenders are on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Last week at the 23rd session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues in New York, I met and heard firsthand from Indigenous Leaders and Youth Activists from all corners of the world about the destruction taking place in their communities and the criminalisation they face protecting their land and waterways. The pivotal role of land and environmental defenders in shielding their territories and our climate from exploitative industrial practices cannot be overstated. A growing number of defenders fall victim to fatal attacks, while others endure intimidation, legal persecution, and physical assaults. Indigenous Peoples protect 80% of the world's biodiversity, we must uphold the safety of defenders. Read about the rapid response emergency funding and solidarity support that Lush is providing as we move into our second year of our Frontline Defenders Fund.
