My heart and prayers go out to all the individuals and families affected by the recent fires in Los Angeles. The devastation is truly heartbreaking, and my thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragedy. This time around, it hit home for me, with friends being affected or living very nearby. I know for some who have lost their homes, the recovery will be long and challenging. Hopefully, the government can step in and provide the appropriate help and resources to aid in rebuilding and healing. Looking at past fires in California and Arizona, it's clear that stronger intergovernmental agreements and coordination are necessary to better address these challenges. Moving forward, governments, local departments, and communities must work together to find long-term solutions. I hope that in the future, those same people can say, 'We are covered, we have a way to protect our home,' with technologies like fire detection systems and outdoor alarm systems with sprinklers in place. Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS new Executive Director, Danny Whitman, and the rest of the senior staff have worked hard to identify the best organizations to receive emergency grants to assist with the LA Wildfires. The focus, as always, is on the organizations making an immediate, tangible difference for those impacted by the wildfires. These are not behemoth international aid organizations, but ones that know these communities well and have a track record of effectively addressing these kinds of crises.     With the support of Bob Wankel and Phil Birsh, followed by the unanimous approval of the Executive Committee, Broadway Cares has wired emergency grants totaling $500,000 to four vital organizations helping those impacted by the wildfires. That includes $250,000 to the Entertainment Community Fund, which is helping those in the industry affected by the wildfires get emergency financial assistance to cover housing, transportation, food, clothing, medical supplies, and prescriptions; $100,000 for Los Angeles Regional Food Bank; $100,000 for California Fire Foundation supporting firefighters and survivors of wildfires; and $50,000 for longtime Broadway Cares grantee Project Angel Food.

The American Red Cross and The Salvation Army offer emergency shelter, meals, and volunteer opportunities. Dial 211 or visit 211.org for United Way’s local resources—covering everything from housing to financial support. Don’t forget mental health: call or text the Disaster Distress Helpline at 1-800-985-5990 for 24/7 emotional care. And for pets, the ASPCA and Humane Society mobilize rescue efforts and shelter services. "The new recovery center, at the west end of 10850 Pico Blvd., is operated by the FEMA and houses federal, state and local government agencies and nonprofits providing an array of services — from assistance applying for disaster relief loans and accessing mental health resources to help replacing lost or destroyed documents like birth certificates and passports. "The center opened today at 1 p.m. and will be fully operational by Wednesday, Jan. 15, serving the community from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. "In addition to FEMA, the site includes Los Angeles city and county departments and agencies focused on housing, economic development, public health, children and family services, homelessness, disability services, animal services, property taxes and other areas. Among the nonprofits represented are the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Team Rubicon and the Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation."
