American Red Cross’ Post

What should have been an exciting moment for Andrea Pennington quickly turned terrifying when she experienced an amniotic fluid embolism while giving birth to her son. This rare and life-threatening condition led to severe respiratory distress, and Andrea was rushed into an emergency C-section. For four days, she relied on a ventilator to breathe, and on top of that, experienced a blood clotting issue throughout her body. During her time in the hospital, Andrea needed 82 units of blood and platelets, which strained the hospital’s supply of type O negative blood. Additional blood products needed to be flown in from other states to keep her alive. Because of generous blood donors, both blood and platelets were available when Andrea needed it most, and today, her now 4-year-old son has his mother. ❤️

  • Woman in a hospital bed, intubated and wearing an NG tube. She is holding a newborn, next to her husband who is wearing a cap and mask.
  • Newborn with a pacifier wrapped in a receiving blanket. He is resting next to a sign that reads 'Keep fighting mom. Love, Casey' on a printed blanket.

Amazing story! I used to give until I started taking medication that has deferred me. Now I help share stories to help bring awareness and more blood donors!

This is one very touching story. I for one donate blood through the American Red Cross for over 4 years now. The ability for me to track my donated blood to someone who needs it the most is a wonderful thing. Best part is it actually saves lives. I urge everyone to donate for a great cause.
