In this article from Today’s Dietitian—Diagnosing Malnutrition: AAIM or GLIM?—ASPEN member Jennifer Doley, MBA, RD, CNSC, FAND, compares the key similarities and differences between two diagnostic criteria for malnutrition: AAIM (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Indicators) and GLIM (Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition). She highlights the controversies surrounding these criteria and explains how their use will impact the work of registered dietitians in daily practice. https://ow.ly/kJxq50Spygw

Collaborative research championed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Society for Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) on diagnosing malnutrition has just been published — and selected as the AJCN Editor’s Choice for March. DYK it’s estimated that 25% to 50% of hospitalized patients have malnutrition? Malnutrition is a serious health condition that can decrease a person’s quality of life and increase a person’s risk of death. Many of these patients went undiagnosed because health care providers had no universally accepted tool to check — until now. A malnutrition diagnosis tool, referred to as AAIM, can help registered dietitian nutritionists accurately diagnose malnutrition, making RDNs better able to provide medical nutrition therapy that can improve patient outcomes and reduce health care costs. Read more about this tool in AJCN. 👇 #eatrightPRO #dietetics #malnutrition #medicalnutritiontherapy

Nutrition's Vital Role in Managing Arthritic Pain Arthritis, a global health concern, demands effective symptom control, and nutrition plays a vital role in achieving this. Arthritis encompasses various joint-related conditions united by inflammation, which causes pain and stiffness. Omega-3 fatty acids in salmon and flaxseeds have anti-inflammatory properties, reducing pro-inflammatory molecules and providing natural relief. Colorful fruits and veggies, abundant in antioxidants, combat free radicals, lower inflammation, and oxidative stress, mitigating arthritis symptoms. Conversely, diets high in sugar and processed foods worsen inflammation, emphasizing their reduction. Weight management is crucial as excess weight increases joint stress, exacerbating pain. Hydration is vital to prevent joint stiffness and discomfort. To create personalized dietary plans, consult healthcare professionals or dietitians who consider arthritis type, nutritional needs, allergies, and sensitivities. By making informed nutritional choices, embracing an anti-inflammatory diet, reducing sugar and processed food intake, managing weight, and staying hydrated, individuals can improve their quality of life while effectively managing arthritis pain. I am proud to share our recent paper entitled "Validity of nutrition screening tools for risk of malnutrition among hospitalized adult patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis". In this study, a total of 51 malnutrition risk screening tools and 9 reference standards were identified. The meta-analyses assessed four common malnutrition risk screening tools against two reference standards (Subjective Global Assessment [SGA] and European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism [ESPEN] criteria). 📢As International Thyroid Awareness Week (May 25-31) is approaching, we want to highlight the link between thyroid function and iodine intake. Adequate iodine nutrition is an important determinant of thyroid function worldwide. Dr. Sarah Bath, Senior Lecturer, Public Nutrition, University of Surrey and partner of the EUthyroid 2 consortium, has published a review article on the relationship between thyroid function and iodine intake: 📍Despite the advances made since the 1990s to eliminate iodine deficiency related disorders, iodine deficiency remains a significant public health concern worldwide, particularly during pregnancy and in early childhood. 📍While severe iodine deficiency is less common nowadays, mild-to-moderate deficiency during pregnancy can still have consequences for the brain development of the baby. It is essential to ensure adequate iodine intake before and during pregnancy. 📍Iodised salt programmes have helped many countries improve iodine intake, yet progress is slipping to due to competing priorities. 📍Iodised salt, cow's milk, dairy products, and fish are good sources of iodine, with iodised salt being the simplest method to ensure sufficient iodine intake. 📍A shift towards a predominantly plant-based diet (e.g. plant-based drinks may not be fortified with iodine), people might not get enough iodine. It is important to find a way to get it from the right sources (iodised salt, cow's milk, dairy products, fish). Bath SC.
