Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine Class of 2024.
During my dental school interview Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine I was asked two pivotal questions: “Tell me about yourself” and “What defines you?” My answer was a reflection of my core values. Perseverance: This is the foundation of my journey. Without it, I would never have taken the first step towards my aspirations. It’s perseverance that fuels my courage to embark on new paths and embrace challenges, particularly in the demanding and intricate world of dentistry. Consistency: This is the key to my persistence. It ensures not just the initiation but the successful completion of my endeavors. Consistency is what keeps me anchored, maintaining steady progress and unwavering dedication, even in the face of obstacles. Together, these traits define not just my approach to my dental career but also my approach to life: a blend of steadfast determination and reliable effort, driving me towards excellence. Remember, your journey is unique, and embracing your strengths while being aware of areas for growth will help you thrive in 2024 and beyond. Best of luck in your endeavors! 🌟 Exciting News in Dental Education! 🌟 As a resident doctor specializing in dentistry, I'm thrilled about the groundbreaking changes proposed in the National Dental Commission Bill, 2023. This bill heralds a new era of excellence in dental education and patient care in India. Here's why I'm excited: ✅ Streamlining Policies: The bill aims to replace outdated structures with the accountable National Dental Commission, ensuring transparency and upholding stringent standards. ✅ Affordability and Quality: Regulating fees in private dental colleges prioritizes accessibility to education without compromising on quality. It's a win-win for aspiring dentists from diverse backgrounds! ✅ Merit-Based Selection: Standardizing admissions through national eligibility tests ensures fairness and uniformity in dental education, laying a solid foundation for future professionals. ✅ Global Standards: The requirement for Indian students with foreign qualifications to clear the National Exit Test (Dental) ensures harmonization of standards and safeguards patient well-being. Let's rally behind the National Dental Commission Bill, 2023, and usher in a new era of excellence in dental care! 💪🦷 #NationalDentalCommissionBill #DentalEducation #HealthcareReform #QualityCare #Professionalism #NationalDentalCommissionBill #DentalEducation #HealthcareReform #QualityCare #Professionalism #DentalProfession #MedicalEducation #PatientCare #DentalStandards #PublicHealth

This is my latest blog, written for The Pankey Institute, which I have supported with content and editing for almost 27 years. In this article, I revisit Dr. Barry F. Polansky's 2021 book The Porch: A Dental Fable. Dr. Polansky hoped the book would help new dentists discover how to practice virtuously, foster responsible relationships focused on well-being, and lean on mentors and study clubs to encourage them. My Cliff Notes: “Eudaimonia,” rooted in Aristotelian philosophy, translates to “human flourishing” or “well-being” and is integral to a comprehensive approach to dental care. It extends beyond clinical outcomes, considering the impact on patients’ overall health and life satisfaction. Integrating virtue ethics—compassion, honesty, integrity—into practice fosters trust and well-being for dentists and patients, leading to professional fulfillment. Two primary principles that Aristotle’s philosophy shares with positive psychology and patient-centered care are taking a holistic approach and involving the patient in a co-discovery process of inductive learning. Both require time and intention. 1) A holistic approach addresses patients' physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. This includes understanding their aspirations and fears about oral health and aligning care with their life goals. 2) Co-discovery involves patients in exploring their health and treatment options. This collaborative approach leads to the patient making informed decisions that align with their values and aspirations. The results are mutual trust, mutual growth, and the patient's development of self-responsibility and appreciation. Dr. Polansky's take-home message: A long, fulfilling career in dentistry is based on developing a systematic approach to practice that enhances the doctor-patient relationship for the benefit of patients, living purposefully with balance, striving for personal holistic health, and being in community with colleagues to nourish the wellness and careers of younger dentists—all hallmarks of The Pankey Institute. #patientcenteredcare #dentistry #ethics #pankeyinstitute #flourishing

The challenges new dental graduates face...There are a few things that can be done to help new dental graduates start their careers on a positive note, according to Barry Lyon, DDS. Dr. Lyon, a chief dental officer for the division of orthodontics and pediatric dentistry for Dental Care Alliance, recently spoke with Becker's about the challenges new dentists experience entering the dental field. Editor's note: This Q&A is part of a weekly series featuring Dr. Lyon focused on topics in the dental industry and DSO field. This response was lightly edited for clarity and length. Dr. Barry Lyon: Dental school is a long four-year journey that requires working hard, learning totally new concepts and being skilled at time management. No wonder finally obtaining a professional degree is so satisfying. However, the learning isn’t over. There are totally new challenges to face, and expectations of what practicing dentistry must be like are often not met. There’s an old saying that recent grads "don’t know what they don’t know." Practicing dentistry is not easy for seasoned practitioners; for new dentists, it can be daunting. Perhaps the most important decision a new grad makes is selecting their first job, and that can be a make-or-break decision. Beginning a career in the wrong office is at the very least discouraging, while landing in the right place is a tremendous advantage. The greatest benefit to the newly hired dentist is being mentored by a successful and seasoned practitioner who can take what was learned in the artificial environment of dental school and show how to make it work in real life. Learning to work with an assistant, understanding the needs of the patient, developing the proper treatment plan and avoiding cases beyond their experience level all allow a new dentist to get started on the right foot. Success, both professional and financial, is readily achievable by simply providing the patient what they need without the specter of education loan repayments influencing their decisions. #dental #achieve #latinoleaders #blackleadership #medicine #healthcare #publichealth #populationhealth #communityhealth #leadership
