We've been getting to work out in #Ward8! As many of you know, we don't address food deserts because we know that food access is a man-made problem with plenty of man-made solutions available for those who care to fix it. Although Ward 8 has the highest number of #farmers in #ChocolateCity, it is still considered the hardest hit by what we call #FoodApartheid. Since the two wards #EastOfTheRiver can only access produce at two big box stores, #DreamingOutLoud is building a market in #HistoricAnacostia! The significance of building something at the intersection of #MLK and #MarionBarry is not lost on us, but knowing that we will be able to give more market access to #BlackFarmers and #BlackBusinessOwners in the region while giving our community a chance to buy #LocallyGrown organic produce is an honor and a privilege that we don't take lightly. On a small acreage outside of Quinter, Kan., Lee and Connie Reed, of Reed’s Bees, produce all-natural products made from honeybees. It all started in 2012 when the Reed’s acquired two hives of honeybees. Intrigued by the fun, little insects, they began selling local honey to pay it forward to their community. Now, in addition to selling fresh honey and flavored honey products at farmer’s markets around the state of #Kansas, they also developed a line of all-natural, premium skincare products such as herbal salve, baby balm, lip balm, deodorant, and a lotion bar.   It’s #WorldBeeDay, and Sunflower Electric Economic Development is “buzzing” about the importance of bees and other pollinators to the ecosystem––and our #economy. As a kid, did you ever care about what fancy names or labels came with your candies?? As long as those delectable treats tickled our taste buds and gave us sheer satisfaction, that was all that mattered...right Little did we know, that agriculture played a vital role in bringing those indigenous candies to our eager mouths. You see, behind every candy lies the hard work and dedication of farmers and agricultural experts who toil in the fields. These unsung heroes cultivate and grow the ingredients that eventually become the sweet delights we love. Take, for instance, one of my childhood favorites, the mouth-watering coconut candy. The luscious coconut that forms the base of this candy is nurtured and harvested by coconut farmers who carefully tend to their coconut trees. These farmers make sure that their trees receive ample sunlight, water, and nutrients to yield the best coconuts with the perfect balance of sweetness and flavor. Without their expertise and dedication, we wouldn't have that creamy goodness that makes our taste buds dance with joy. And let's not forget about the scrumptious fruit candies that made our mouths water. Fruits like mangoes, pineapples, and strawberries are meticulously grown and harvested by dedicated farmers. They carefully choose the best varieties, provide the right soil conditions, protect the trees from pests, and ensure the fruits ripen to perfection. These farmers play a crucial role in bringing those fruity flavors to our candies, pleasing our taste buds, and providing us with that much-needed satisfaction. So, the next time you indulge in your favorite indigenous candy, take a moment to appreciate the hard work and expertise of our farmers. They are the unsung heroes behind the scenes, who make sure we experience that SWEET delight and satisfaction.
