Scientist, Professor of Global Healthcare Delivery, Director of Knowledge Translation Unit, Research for Social Impact, Primary Healthcare for Universal Health Coverage, Reducing Inequities
I was privileged to hear this in person. And what a courageous, thoughtful and thought-provoking speech it was. It’s a must to listen to this. So click on the link if you haven’t already. Three lessons reasonated particularly for me. Here's how it's landed for me. First, academia’s obsession with reputation over impact. The academic enterprise at its most egoistic leaves me cold - all rankings, H indexes, grants, publications, affiliations and titles. Metrics that do not matter at all to people who seek care from the world’s flawed health systems or who are excluded from being empowered with trustworthy and timely information in language that does not exclude. Second, our default towards crisis as a culture. The legacy of the struggle against apartheid, and the pandemics of HIV and COVID has wired us for this. And it is costing those whom we lead. We can only dismantle this and build a healthy growth culture intentionally and with discipline. Third, the cost of being a black academic and leader. The weight on individual shoulders is immense. It is costing people’s health and is a deterrent to young people claiming career opportunities that will lead to leadership. Thank you for serving UCT Ntobeko. For your example of leadership. And best wishes for your next chapter at the SAMRC.
Professor Ntobeko Ntusi, the chair and head of the Department of Medicine at UCT) and Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH), assumes the role of president and CEO of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) from July.
