Pakistan leads the world in viral hepatitis C cases, with an estimated 8.8 million individuals affected. This staggering figure represents 44% of all new hepatitis C infections worldwide, largely stemming from the unsafe administration of medical injections. According to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) Global Hepatitis Report for 2024, viral hepatitis stands as the second most prevalent infectious cause of death globally, claiming 1.3 million lives annually—equivalent to tuberculosis, another prominent infectious disease. Recent data spanning 187 countries reveal a concerning trend: the estimated deaths attributable to viral hepatitis rose from 1.1 million in 2019 to 1.3 million in 2022. Among these fatalities, 83% are attributed to hepatitis B, with the remaining 17% linked to hepatitis C. Alarmingly, on a global scale, approximately 3,500 individuals succumb to hepatitis B and C infections each day. When the Mpox (formerly Monkeypox) outbreak started in the summer of 2022, the health sector, at large, was alerted to begin the surveillance of the infection spread and spread awareness regarding the infection and associated testing and safety measures. Due to the atypical nature of this outbreak - transmitting predominantly as a sexually transmitted infection in non-endemic parts of the world - the concern that many undiagnosed cases would render the outbreak uncontrollable was still looming among the health care workers and epidemiologists. To determine the number of undiagnosed Mpox infections in the United States, HealthTrackRx immediately collaborated with the CDC on this surveillance study during June–September 2022 (during the outbreak’s peak). New MMWR describes a multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) outbreak during Nov 2021-Nov 2022 in a state with few reported TB infections. Even in states with low occurrence, TB outbreaks can occur, and MDR TB can spread in the United States. Public health officials and health care providers should focus on prompt identification of MDR TB and treatment of latent TB infection. Ahead of #WorldHepatitisDay 2024 on 28 July, we have just updated our Viral hepatitis elimination barometer among people who inject drugs in Europe! Hepatitis C virus infection is the infectious disease associated with the highest burden of disease among people who inject drugs, the virus being easily transmitted through the sharing of needles and syringes. Hepatitis B virus infection is also much more prevalent among people who inject drugs than in the general population. Through the barometer, public health workers, policymakers and other interested users can access data to gauge their country’s performance according to 11 epidemiological indicators. Readers can download data tables and infographics and view which countries have achieved the targets set. On July 28th, the World commemorated World Hepatitis Day. This year’s theme, It’s Time For Action, sets emphasis on bridging the “know-do” gap in implementation and scaling up of viral hepatitis interventions. Viral hepatitis remains a major global public health threat in Africa. The World Health Organisation (WHO) 2024 Global Hepatitis Report clearly highlights the urgency of the viral hepatitis problem in Africa. It is estimated that 73 million people in Africa are living with chronic hepatitis B and C infection. Among these, only 4.2% with hepatitis B and 13% with hepatitis C have been diagnosed and 0.2% and 3% of people with hepatitis B and C respectively were receiving treatment as of 2022.
