#DidYouKnow that extreme heat is the top weather-related public health hazard in the United States? Heat waves may not be as violent as other climate disasters such as hurricanes or wildfires, but they are statistically more deadly. Paul Schramm of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explained in an interview to EESI that it can be difficult to predict the impact that heat can have on communities in various places: "The difficult thing about extreme heat is, what is classified as a heat wave is very different in different parts of the country depending on where you are and what you normally experience. For example, if it is 85 degrees Fahrenheit in Maine for several days in a row, that is a threat to health, with increased visits to emergency departments for heat. If that happened in Arizona, you would not see anything like that."
