#ClimateChange poses many dangers to health. One of the most pressing dangers we face is the increased risk of flooding. As global temperatures rise, so does the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events. Flooding can devastate communities, displacing families, destroying homes, and disrupting lives. It also can bring waterborne diseases and mental health challenges. In El Zonte, #ElSalvador, the risk of flooding is an everpresent danger that must be monitored. Thanks to #Americares work, the community is able to detect when flooding may occur from storms or rivers. Learn more about floods and their dangers here: https://lnkd.in/gEzf2fZ3

The scorching heatwave sweeping across South Asia isn't just a weather anomaly—it's a stark reminder of the profound impact of climate change on people's lives. As temperatures soar to unprecedented levels, millions are left vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, forced to grapple with the harsh reality of the climate crisis. In the face of such adversity, the work we do at Greenpeace South Asia becomes more vital than ever. We're not just advocates for climate justice; we're champions for those whose voices are often drowned out by the heatwaves of indifference. Our mission is clear: to ensure that every individual, regardless of their circumstances, has the right to a safe and sustainable future. Through our relentless advocacy efforts, we strive to raise awareness about the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable communities. From the elderly to pregnant women, outdoor workers to children, no one is immune to the ravages of extreme weather events like heatwaves. By shedding light on these injustices, we empower individuals to take action and demand change. But advocacy is only one part of the equation. We also rely on your support to drive meaningful impact. Whether it's signing petitions, volunteering your time, or making a donation, every action you take brings us one step closer to achieving our shared goal of climate justice for all. Together, let's turn the tide against the climate crisis. Let's stand in solidarity with those on the frontlines of climate change. And let's build a future where no one is left behind in the heat of the moment. Join us in our fight for a more just and sustainable world. #ClimateJustice #ActOnClimate #Greenpeace #Heatwave #SouthAsia Greenpeace International
Pause for a moment and think about the unsung heroes of our cities - the workers in the informal sector. Have you ever considered how they endure the scorching heat? 🌞💼 It's a real struggle! These resilient individuals spend their days under the blazing sun, hustling to make ends meet. ☀️💪 But here's the harsh truth: the rising temperatures not only affect their health but also their livelihoods. 😔 Heat-related illnesses can push them to the brink, adding more challenges to their already tough lives. 💔 That's why we're urging the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to recognize heat waves as a national disaster. Will you stand with us in supporting this crucial cause? Take action now! 💚 https://bit.ly/4bfM7WJ #HeatwaveHeroes #ClimateJustice #SupportOurWorkers

1.47 billion people are at significant risk of one-in-a-hundred-year flooding events. 587 million people face flood risk while living on less than $5.50 per day. Natural disasters annually cause a $520 billion reduction in consumption, pushing 26 million people into poverty. 3.6 billion lives are at risk of a climate crisis, potentially causing 250,000 additional deaths per year from 2030 to 2050. As the population grows, more people become vulnerable to climatic hazards. Sources: WHO (2023) and Brunet et al. (2023).

The toll of extreme weather is adding up, and we're all paying the price. As big as the dollar figures can get, they can never convey all that is truly lost in these disasters. Countless costs to people get left out of official tallies, including mental and physical trauma. Many of the impacts of disasters are not included in global disaster datasets. The costs associated with slow-onset and small-scale events, and the knock-on effects of broken supply chains, losses in productivity, compromised physical and mental health, and the enduring impacts of disrupted education often go uncounted. All of these contribute to an invisible toll of disasters far greater than the economic estimates. Read more ➡ https://lnkd.in/dVfncdTe

Public Health | R | Looking forward to making data-driven health system reforms through data science and research
Current flooding impact statistics: ● People Affected: +250,000 ● Households Displaced: 47,000 (Approx. 235,000 people) ● Injuries: 174 individuals ● Missing Persons: 75 ● Fatalities: 238 reported, including 9 in the last 24 hours across 9 counties. (Source; https://lnkd.in/dWG26MRZ) The study below shows that as climate change worsens, more people will be affected by floods. The harsh reality is that the poor in the urban areas of developing countries, causing the least contribution to climate change, face the greatest risk from flooding. Ironic right? Loss of livelihood, loss of homes and wealth, impact on mental health, Increased exposure to water-related, water-borne, and water-washed diseases, and the risks of disease outbreaks are all probable effects of flooding. Financial resilience is key to minimizing the health impact of such disasters. Investing in preparedness measures can significantly reduce the toll on these vulnerable communities. A similar study in Kenya would help raise the cause for action with facts and evidence.

Floods and extreme rainfall events pose significant risks to Human Health! Additionally, individuals may sustain injuries from debris and encounter electrical hazards in flooded areas. The physical dangers associated with floods are evident, but the mental health impact should not be overlooked. Acute flooding events, as well as the subsequent loss of homes and livelihoods, can contribute to PTSD, anxiety and depression among affected individuals. Surprise effects can be seen anywhere on the planet. #healtheffects #flood #dubaiflood #climatevents #infiohm #extremerainfall #health #wealth

The two main reasons behind the forced displacement of people: #Climate hazards such as extreme weather, higher temperatures, droughts, floods, wildfires, storms, sea-level rise, soil degradation, and acidifying oceans are intensifying, threatening infrastructure, health, and water and food security. #Also, the long-term effects of armed conflict on civilians include increased mental health problems, disability from physical trauma and other health effects, increased family and community violence, and morbidity and mortality resulting from prolonged damage to infrastructure.
