NEW: President José Raul Mulino took office yesterday, promising significant action on crucial trade and foreign policy fronts, Mary Triny Zea. Analysts said he’ll likely take decisive measures on the migration crisis in the Darién Gap and the Panama Canal’s critical water shortage, while the fate of the largest copper mine in Central America closed last year remains uncertain. In the hours after his inauguration, Mulino signed a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. to “close” the Darién Gap on the border with Colombia to stop migrants from crossing. Mulino can ill-afford to fail to deliver on major campaign issues like migration. #migration #panama #politics #elecciones2024 https://lnkd.in/e2eNbs7w

Malawi and Mozambique Launch Trade and Security Initiatives Malawi and Mozambique are set to roll out two new projects aimed at enhancing trade and security between the nations. During discussions in Blantyre, spokesperson for Malawi’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship, Wellington Chiponde, emphasized that legal frameworks are being finalized for smooth project implementation. The initiatives, facilitated through the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity program, aim to reduce trade costs and illegal immigration by streamlining border management systems. Optimizing Border Management for Economic Growth The new border management information and border pass systems will improve security and ensure compliance with immigration formalities. According to Chiponde, these systems will address challenges such as smuggling and illegal trade, which have hindered economic growth in both countries. By optimizing border management, the projects seek to facilitate legal trade, improve security, and foster economic development between Malawi and Mozambique. International Support for Trade Facilitation The IOM - UN Migration, with financial backing from the World Bank, is leading the project’s implementation. Nomagugu Hanyana Ncube, chief of party for the IOM, stated that the initiatives will ease trade for cross-border traders and contribute to economic growth. She noted that existing trade barriers have driven traders toward illegal channels, which these new systems aim to eliminate. #TradeFacilitation #MalawiMozambique #SouthernAfricaConnectivity

MPC to help Governments better filter immigration problems in the Mediterranean....
A different alternative: Immigration and Private Security Companies (MPC) For decades, private security companies have been gaining a foothold in many countries in the operational field, in different sectors of our economy: Mining, Maritime for the control of commercial transport, airport services, in high-risk areas such as Iraq, Afghanistan, countries on the African continent etc. Many governments have for years, and continue to do so, used private companies to maintain the security of their resources or private investments in foreign lands. Private companies that have highly trained personnel among their ranks because they come from the various Western Armed Forces with front line experience in the international scenarios in which the West has found itself. We continued to discuss the control of the territory between European countries and the Maghreb from where the majority of illegal immigration originates, such as Tunisia. For decades, hundreds of millions of euros have been spent on useless bilateral agreements, with concessions that have only favoured warlords, mafias and political parties, weighing on the coffers of the various governments in southern Europe. Using private companies to control the territory on the Tunisian coast, for example, would counter local and overseas corruption and therefore also the criminal organizations that control human trafficking. With the use of MPC companies, illegal landings could therefore be reduced and, alongside the creation of special reception centers in the Maghreb countries, the security of the territory would be better monitored. Finally, a control at origin on the indiscriminate trafficking of human beings would drastically reduce the burden of control and regularization procedures on migrants in the EU countries of first reception.

Finland is the EU country with the longest border with Russia, making it a popular destination for asylum seekers. To address this, Finland shut the 1,340 km (830 mile) frontier last year. As a result, only a few dozen emigrants have arrived from Russia so far this year – down from 1,300 in 2023. Now the right-wing coalition government wants to go a step further, Reuters reports. This week it proposed emergency legislation to stop asylum seekers from entering the country via Russia, claiming that Moscow has been promoting emigration to suit its own ends – something the Kremlin has denied. Despite the dramatic drop in emigrants arriving from Russia, Finnish leaders say the law is needed because warmer weather will make travel easier (the border is snow-bound for much of the year). The draft law acknowledges that turning migrants back without processing asylum applications would breach Finland‘s international rights commitments. But it would be temporary and only activated in exceptional circumstances, according to Prime Minister Petteri Orpo. A network of European independent think tanks working on EU international cooperation for global sustainable development.
The latest IAI - Istituto Affari Internazionali commentary provides an analysis of the EU-Tunisia migration agreements. It highlights several key points: ▫️ Tunisia's fragile state: The political instability and economic hardship have created a climate ripe for irregular migration. The country's security forces are further weakened by corruption and internal divisions. ▫️ Lack of accountability and human rights abuses as well as smuggling by Tunisian security forces . ▫️ Deterrence-based approach: Questionable tactic relying heavily on border controls and security measures. The commentary by Refugees International argues that while this approach may have altered migration routes, it fails to address the underlying causes and has led to an increase in human rights abuses. #ETTGmemberDissemination Read the full article bellow: https://lnkd.in/dXJAfzH4

https://lnkd.in/eeCiDvuT The European Union has unveiled an £6.3 billion aid package for Egypt, triggering concerns that economic pressure, conflicts and chaos in neighbouring countries could result in more migrants travelling to Europe. The deal will be signed during a visit by European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and the leaders of Belgium, Italy, Austria, Cyprus and Greece, according to Egyptian officials. The package includes both grants and loans over the next three years for the Arab world's most populous country, according to the European Union Mission in Cairo. According to a document from the EU mission in Egypt, the two sides have promoted their cooperation to the level of a "strategic and comprehensive partnership," paving the way for expanding Egypt-EU cooperation in various economic and non-economic areas. Continue reading The EU will provide assistance to Egypt's government to fortify its borders especially with Libya, a major transit point for migrants fleeing poverty and conflicts in Africa and the Middle East, and will support the government in hosting Sudanese who have fled nearly a year of fighting between rival generals in their country.

The Thailand-Myanmar border has been the largest country-to-country migration corridor in Southeast Asia and among the largest in the world. Thailand alone hosts at least 70% of all Myanmar nationals living abroad. The conflict in Myanmar, which started in 2021, has further intensified mobility and the significance of the Thailand-Myanmar border. However, existing migration management systems do not fully capture and address the multifaceted complexities of the influx into Thailand.
