Excited to see this call for increased support for organizations like Teach For America Metro Atlanta that are encouraging more college graduates to engage in professions that are central to ensuring that our country and our world becomes a more equitable place. As a parent of a college senior, I truly understand the fears that can come with helping our graduates take a next step that will reward them professionally and help them build a life of stability and economic independence. Often, that argument is what causes us, as parents, to guide our children away from organizations of national service which frequently don't come with financial rewards as other professional pathways. 20 years ago, when I first joined Teach For America, my parents had the same concerns, but what I have found is a wealth of professional experiences with students, families, teachers, and communities that has far surpassed the rewards I could have received by following a more lucrative path. That being said, the work of our teachers should continued to be professionalized through better compensation - lets socialize the notion of increasing base teacher pay above a living wage. According to a SmartAsset 2024 survey, in Atlanta an individual would need to make $107,451 to live comfortably. Starting salary for teachers in Atlanta Public Schools is now $61,816 (after a big salary increase this year). I am grateful that so many districts in Metro Atlanta have prioritized increasing teacher pay as a result of staggering inflation, but collectively we still need to do more so that our educators are seen and treated as professionals. Until that time, our educators will continue to reap the numerous non-monetary rewards of teaching while waiting for all of us to do more.

The United States Marine Corps Commandant, General Eric Smith, presented a great civilian model for #resilience. Great meeting and perfect timing with #IndependenceDay. What will help America move forward and stay ahead? It’s not a “me” mentality on how much can I make, how much can I sell, how much can I buy. General Smith made this abundantly clear immediately as well as wove it through his presentation and answers to questions. Our nation has acted with collaboration in times of #disaster. Post #Hurricane Katrina, the nation (and world) came to the aid of the City of New Orleans to rebuild and renew. How did that happen? People #respond to what matters to them. Though the greater #community deployed with a nation of #service mentality – it’s not just #ArmedForces or #FirstResponders. While we need those who answer that call on a 24/7/365 basis, we need to have everyone thinking about others every day. It can be small as in a small act of kindness – sharing an explanation to a neighbor child on your expertise, giving your old books for a non-profit sale that supports their mission, dedicating time to feed the hungry at an outreach event. (See the trend: in no way is it all about the Benjamins – aka money for my non-American network.) #ForceDesign has many meanings – words are important. It’s how you integrate with others that makes the whole #stronger. While we each have special talents, another recent LinkedIn post about hope used the phrase “it’s a belief in all of us over none of us.” (Amen, Misaha Suzuki Graham.) Another post discussed overcoming horrible circumstances and coming back together “trying different methods and approaches.” (Inspiration and eloquence while recognizing historical pain, Van Jones.) How do you give strength to what makes America different from all other nations and distinguishes our democracy from other models? Is it voluntary work if it's mandatory? 💭 The Conservative Party's proposed National Service Plan suggests that all 18-year-olds in the UK should complete a year of community volunteering or military training. The goal is to foster civic duty and national pride. My first thought was: Can mandatory service truly be labeled as 'voluntary' work? The world and America in particular needs this: volunteerism, civic duty and service are something sadly that seems to be at a loss in my country. The opportunity I had to serve in the Peace Corps helped me realize the necessity of community engagement and cohesion and the immense need for these opportunities for citizens around the world to build strong and resilient democracies at the local and national levels. I am also reminded of Robert Putnam’s “Bowling Alone” and an update he wrote in 2010, reflecting on the imperative of “social capital” which research has shown makes “citizens happier, healthier, reduces crime and makes governments more responsive, and honest and improves economic prosperity…” https://lnkd.in/ejFsvTs9 - all of this to say: building this social capital is imperative fo “any democracy, any society can’t be healthy without this resource…” (paraphrased!) - Americorps and Peace corps forging a stronger partnership can only be beneficial to growing social capital and I encourage all of us to look closer at our own civic engagement and service to our communities- this is where change and development starts.
