NIR: Efficiency is destiny OK, today is the launch of the new #Perten. After being bought by PerkinElmer and then integrated with #PerkinElmer, Perten is being separated back out. And I am not going to talk about this today because last time I did I got in trouble for being too early. So if you read about that, it needs to come from somewhere else because I am not going to tell anyone about the relaunch of Perten. Wouldn't be prudent. Nope, I am talking about optical efficiencies. People can deny the truth about which instrument designs make the most and best use of the photons, but you can't lie to the light bulb. It will burn out faster the more power your push through it. And, they tend to be a significant source of heat in a closed box. Dumping an extra 15, 25, 40 or 100 watts into a closed box is a pain to get rid of. It is especially a pain when you have a dusty environment or you are sitting someplace where it is too hot for humans, like in Louisiana inside a flour mill. Those arguments about longer wavelengths get betrayed by the bulb too. It takes extra energy to make more of those. The shorter ones are easier because of the blackbody curve. So, look over the instrument. Just fins on it to radiate away the heat? That unit is optically efficient because it can do more with less power. Need to have a fan and an air filter and then a radiator with coolant in it. Not good. That happens because of optical inefficiency. It doesn't matter what "technical" arguments people make. The way that lamp runs tells the story. You spend the efficiency on faster measurements and less heat. You spend it on closed systems and no working fluid. The hardware knows. And, when you are working in an unheated warehouse in Winnipeg, you can take away some of the heat insulation and heat radiation efficiency to make it work at minus whoa temperatures. Next time you are filling the radiator on a NIR instrument or changing the source, just remember how efficient they told you it is and compare that to what you are doing.
